HKUST Accounting Graduates in Great Demand
Over 80% of graduates of the Accounting Department of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology have already been offered jobs by major accounting firms.
“The demand for accountants in this part of the world is tremendous. And, as China opens up and links its accounting system to the rest of the world, the demand is likely to continue for many years to come,” Professor Jevons Lee, Head of the Accounting Department, said, “Accounting is a fast expanding profession, which is in need of manpower. ” Students from other academic disciplines have also been snapped up by the accounting profession, including some students from economics.
“We have excellent students, and quality faculty. Not all of our students are going into the job market. One of our best students, Mr Clement Har, was offered scholarships from five major universities in U.S.A. to further his studies , including the University of Pensylvania’s Wharton School, University of California, Berkeley, University of British Columbia and University of California, San Diego, and State University of New York at Buffalo. He has already decided to join the Wharton Business School.”
Professor Lee said, “Accounting is one of the oldest professions in the world, but as anacademic discipline it is new. We are fortunate that HKUST has directed resources into developing a world-class accounting department. We plan to train a lot of doctoral and post- doctoral students. We want them to succeed and become leading academics in this field, and we aim to play a leading role in the develpment of the accounting profession in China.”
“Our students showed real entrepreneurial spirit by coming here,” said Professor Lee. “Many of them gave up the chance of studying at Hong Kong’s well established universities to join us. A willingness to take risks and an entrepreneurial spirit is what counts in today’s business world, so I think our students can look forward to a great future.”
