Long ago, an old man lost his black horse because it ran away. Everyone felt bad for him. But the man was not sad. He said, “Maybe losing the horse is not bad luck.”

The next day, the old man’s black horse came back with a white horse. Everyone was happy for him. But the man wasn’t excited. He said, “Maybe this is not good luck at all.”

His son loved to ride the white horse. But one day he fell from it and broke his leg. Once again, everyone felt bad for him. But the man was not sad. He said, “Maybe it’s not such a bad thing.”

A little later the country went to war and all the young men had to join the war. The old man’s son still had a broken leg, so he did not have to go and fight. In the end, the old man’s son was spared.

The old man teaches us that what seems to be a blessing can turn out to be a disaster and what seems to be a disaster can turn out to be a blessing. So it is best to accept things as they come.

57 Why did the man’s son not have to go to war? (A) Because he broke his leg.
