天主教輔仁大學 100 學年度大一英文課程大綱

Freshman English Syllabus, Fall Semester

Class: Department of Landscape Architecture, Applied Arts, and Music

Class Code: Art Instructor: 林德玲

課程目標(Course Objectives)

This course will enhance students’ listening, speaking, reading and writing ability. The training prepares them to integrate the four skills as a whole to facilitate communication. The materials including reading and listening provide them with new information about special issues and topics of everyday life. Students will use the information to express their interesting opinions. To facilitate their ability to use English as means of communication, basic review of grammar, vocabulary and idioms are practiced from the online GEPT questions. Students will benefit from these exercises to make grammatically correct sentences since accuracy is the major concern of learner’s language ability. Group study and class discussion are managed in a way to encourage students to say what interests them. Attendance includes frequent participation in class, but does not count chatting and sleeping. At the end of the semester, students will finish their own script of a written conversation and sound record it to show the progress they’ve made from the course instruction.

課程教材(Course Materials)

The title of the textbook used by this course is Read This Book 3 published by Cambridge University Press. The book covers various thought-provoking topics. The exercises in the book provide students opportunities to use several practical strategies to think and develop their own ideas and content. In this way, they can learn English in effective and stimulating ways in addition to memorization. The strategies not only benefit students’ reading and writing ability but also help them complete exams such as GEPT, or TOEIC with satisfactory results. To help students prepare language tests, they are required to practice grammar, vocabulary and idioms from Live ABC online materials. Therefore, the grade report includes not only official exams and reports but also scores of activities from Live ABC.

參考書目(Reference)

There are significant supplementary materials and exercises on the university’s online study I-Can which will be automatically shown on students’ computer screen as soon as they click the website.

Students are to visit the web pages regularly to follow up the teacher’s instruction. Students are also encouraged to use English only dictionary instead of relying on a bilingual one. A good dictionary like Longman Contemporary English: the Living Dictionary is recommended, although students do not have the obligation to buy it. For economic and convenient sake, students may go online on OneLook Dictionary. The address is www.onelook.com.
