Appendix A A Sample Article and Tasks in the Pilot Study

姓名 座號 Laugh Your Way to Health and Happiness

Do you ever feel depressed, tired, sick or just burned out? When you feel this way, maybe all that you need to feel better is a good dose of laughter. Laughing can instantly lift your spirits when you’re feeling down. But laughing does more than just make you feel better. Doctors have discovered that adding laughter to your life can make you healthier, too.

In fact, laughing has many physical and psychological benefits. Read on to find out how you can improve your life through laughter!

The most obvious thing laughing does for you is make you feel better. After watching a funny movie or laughing with friends, you feel more relaxed. Life’s problems appear a little bit smaller and you can almost feel your stress disappear.

One reason for this is because laughter has the same stress-relieving effects as exercise. When you laugh, your muscles, especially the ones in your face and stomach, get a good workout. It’s estimated that a good hearty laugh is the equivalent to several minutes of exercise.

Laughing is good for your body in many ways. Laughter, for example,

strengthens your immune system. So when you laugh, you are actually helping your body fight off sickness. Laughing is also a natural way to ease pain. Got a headache?

Laughter just might be the best medicine for you.

Studies have found that people who laugh a lot are less likely to suffer from heart disease. And oddly enough, laughing can even help people who snore. So if you have loved ones who snore, try making them laugh.

In addition to the many health benefits, laughing is also good for your

relationships. As the popular saying goes, “Laugh and the world laugh with you. Cry and you cry alone.”

If you want more people to like you, try laughing more. Having a sense of humor is extremely attractive. Laughing draws people closer together. And it can help relieve tension in relationship.

Unfortunately as we get older, most of us laugh less. So we need to make a conscious effort to laugh more in our daily lives.

Appendix E A Sample Article and Words in the Training Session

1. Avoiding Scams

Did you hear the story about a guy who lost two months’ salary through a telephone scam? If not, you’ve probably heard similar stories. Sadly, scams have become all too common in our society.

In a typical telephone scam, someone contacts you with a persuasive story. The story will usually end with a request for money or perhaps your bank account

information. You may think you’re helping someone or getting a reward or some other benefit, but it’s a trap. Don’t be fooled!

Today’s scam artists are very tricky. They may claim to be a representative from the post office, a hospital or your own bank. They may even claim to be an old classmate! Their stories may vary, but all scams have one goal: to trick you into parting with your cash.

What can you do to avoid being tricked? Follow these suggestions:

1. Educate yourself. Pay attention to news stories about recent scams. Learn the tricks employed by scam artists. If you can recognize a scam, you’ll be better protected.

2. Be skeptical. Scam artists hope to fool you with a moving story, causing you to forget your good judgment. Instead, take your time to think carefully about the caller’ request. A little doubt can protect you.

3. Use common sense. Consider the facts of the story and the nature of the request. If the story stands unlikely, or too good to be true, it probably is. Why would your own bank call to ask you for money? Why would a stranger choose you as the winner of a particular prize?

4. Verify the story. Ask for the name of the caller and the name of the organization he works for. Before you act on his request, call the organization to make sure the story is true. One phone call will often expose a scam quickly. In fact, if you begin asking questions, a caller who is trying to trick you may simply hang up.

Older people are especially vulnerable to scams. So don’t forget to share what you’ve learned with your parents or grandparents. Remember: knowledge is the best defense against scams.

Appendix H A Sample Article and Words in the Study 1. Kobe Bryant – NBA Superstar

When Kobe Bryant graduated from high school and immediately entered the NBA, people shook their heads in disbelief. They couldn’t understand how an 18-year-old, no matter how talented, could compete at the professional level. But Kobe astonished everyone.

His first year in the NBA saw him score 10 pointes or more in 25 games. Since that first impressive season, Kobe has improved every year. Others may not have expected his success in the NBA, but it was no surprise to him. He know he was made for the game.

Kobe Bryant was born on August 23, 1978 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At that time his father, Joe, was playing in the NBA. When Kobe was 5, Joe, resigned from the NBA to play basketball in Italy. He and his family stayed there eight seasons.

Straight to the NBA

The summer before his senior year, Kobe knew that his aspiration of going from high school straight to the NBA was possible. He was working out with the 76ers, Philadelphia’s NBA team. The coach had seen Kobe play and let him practice with the team. On the court with NBA players, Kobe thought, “This is something I can do.”

In 1996, the Charlotte Hornets picked Kobe 13

th

in the first round of the NBA draft. Then they traded him to the Los Angeles Lakers. Kobe became the youngest player ever in the NBA.

After Kobe’s exciting rookie season, he just got better. His skills have improved every year. During the 1998-99 season, Kobe averaged nearly 20 points per game.

And he’s helped the Lakers capture the NBA championship for the last two years.

What’s next for Lakers No. 8? Helping the LA Lakers to a “three-peat” of the NBA championship, he hopes. And a happy marriage with wife Vanessa Laine, whom he married in April of last year. Life looks like a slam dunk for the young superstar.
