Merchandise export and import amounted to MOP1.21 billion and MOP12.01 billion in December, up by 10.3% and 34.2% respectively year-on-year.

Merchandise trade deficit totalled MOP10.80 billion.

For the whole year of 2020, merchandise export fell by 15.5% year-on-year, of which re-exports declined by 18.0% but domestic exports rose by 3.4%;

meanwhile, merchandise import went up by 2.7%. External merchandise trade grew by 0.4% year-on-year to MOP103.37 billion. Merchandise trade deficit totalled MOP81.75 billion, an increase of MOP4.42 billion from MOP77.33 billion in 2019.

Analysed by destination, merchandise export to Hong Kong (MOP7.46 billion) decreased by 8.6% year-on-year in 2020, while exports to mainland China (MOP1.62 billion) and the USA (MOP554 million) expanded by 2.5% and 88.4% respectively. By place of origin, merchandise import from the EU (MOP28.54 billion) and Japan (MOP9.59 billion) grew by 14.5% and 55.2% respectively year-on-year, while imports from mainland China (MOP27.61 billion) dropped by 9.9%.

In the fourth quarter, merchandise export (MOP2.96 billion) fell by 13.1% year-on-year while merchandise import (MOP36.76 billion) rose by 40.2%, resulting in a trade deficit of MOP33.80 billion.
