 Founded on October 26, 1912. Formerly known as the National Peking Medical School. In 1952, was

renamed as Beijing Medical College.

 In 1984， the State Council approved 10 institutions for priority development. Among them, Beijing

Medical College was the only medical institution.

 In 1985, the college was renamed as Beijing Medical University (BMU).

 On April 3rd, 2000, BMU was again incorporated into Peking University. And on May 4th, it was formally renamed Peking University Health Science Center (PUHSC).

 In 2012, the PUHSC is celebrating the centennial anniversary

PUHSC Today

 PUHSC incorporates teaching, research, and medical care activities;

focus on academic education in both undergraduate and graduate schools.

 PUHSC has 6 schools, namely, School of Basic Medical Sciences, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, School of Public Health, School of Nursing, School of Distance Education, and Faculty of

Foundation Education.

 PUHSC offers 10 undergraduate programs , 2 junior college programs, 62 accredited doctoral programs, 72 master programs, and 6 postdoctoral programs. Also PUHSC has 8 affiliated

hospitals, and 13 teaching hospitals.

 PUHSC has enrolled 25,000 students, including 1997 doctoral students, 1891 master program students, 2890 undergraduates; 3 national key discipline, 12 national 2nd key disciplines, and 1

 We have excellent teaching staff, including 12 academicians of two Yuan's (Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering) , 10 committee members of the degree committee subject review groups of the country affair agency . 13 Cheung Kong Scholar specially appointed

professors, 394 Ph.D instructors, 16 winners of the

Distinguished Young Scholar Award of the National Science, 6 winners of the “New century talents “ from the Ministry of human resource and social security. and 37 winners of the “New century talents from the Ministry of Education.

 From 2006 to2010, PUHSC was in charge of 1686 national or provincial research projects ; received 2 national awards and 105 provincial awards. Published 3783 SCI articles.

Ranked first in the field of medical disciplines for several years in the country. Numbers of important research results in leading international medical academic journals.

PUHSC Today

 PUHSC has signed up cooperation agreements with 111 schools and organizations overseas. E.g. Duke University, Yale University, John Hopkins University, Colombia

University, Emory University, WHO, NIH, and CDC, etc.

 PUHSC also established 10 cooperation activities centers with domestic or internationally, 33 student exchange programs, and 13 international scholarships. Create a

international medical education resource sharing platform.

 PUHSC maintains great friendships with international organizations, such as China Medical Board, WHO, NIH, CDC, the World Bank, and Hopkins foundation, etc.

General overview

 Founded in 1922.

 Relocated to current building in 1989.

 With space of 10200 square meters, and more than 600 seats.

 Remodeling in the summer of 2002.

 Form the Peking university medical center library system with 8 affiliated hospital libraries.

Collections in print

 Holds mostly on biology and medical sciences，share the library resources to all the hospitals affiliated to the Peking University.

 Contains 700,000 volumes (including collections from the hospital library)by the end of 2010.

 By the end of 2010, subscribed 768 Chinese and foreign journals.

 Has the manuscript of 'The Holy Benevolent Prescriptions', which is the only copy remained in the mainland China.

 In 1985, the Ministry of Education set up China's sole Foreign Medical Teaching Material Center in PUHSL.

 In 1991, the PUHSL was appointed by the Ministry of Education as the

Central Library of Literature Resources Sharing Network in Northern China.

 In 1993, the Medical Information Administration Committee of the Ministry of Health named PUHSL the authorized searching station for new research index. In 2003, was named by the Ministry of Education .

 It also hosts the National Medical Document and Information Center, which is under the management of the China of Academic Library & Information

System (CALIS), founded by the Ministry of Education in 1998.

• In 2011, participated the 33^rd medical librarian annual conferences in Taiwan.

• There were 43 medical and hospital libraries from Taiwan, 9 medical university libraries from mainland joined this conference. The head of CALIS medical center, and the director of PUKSL – Professor Li, Kong gave welcome remarks

• 6 library directors from Hong Kong and Taiwan participated in this meeting, including directors from: Taipei Medical University, Taipei General Veteran Hospital, Chung Shan University, National Cheng Kung University, Hong Kong University, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

• Conducted CALIS medical librarian continuing eudcation program, develop online classes from March 2007 to December 2010, held 34 expert lectures. 46 partner libraries and total of 801 visiting times joined these online classes. In 2009, the online classes was applied to become one of the national continuing education program, the speakers included distinguish domestic university library directors, the

authoritative scholars, the medical library directors, and those from American, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.

Peking University Five-four Science forum

• Holds once every year, manifests the Peking University academic cultural heritage, promotes the scholarly research, and strengthens the academic exchanges between Peking University Library system.

• 2011 is the tenth meeting, the conference theme was “Constructing the first- class University library information resources system”, the PUHSL evaluated outstanding papers, and had the representative from these outstanding papers make a speech.

• Staff from Peking University library, PUHSL, and libraries from all

departments all participated in discussion, exploration, and exchange ideas.

More than 100 people came to the meeting each year.

Disciplinary competitiveness evaluation study

• From 2010, the PUHSL conducts“The competitiveness evaluation of the 2009 second-level discipline of the basic medical science of medical colleges and

universities nation wide”research. Based on the constructs of the research team, scientific research and education outcomes, this study evaluated 12 second-level disciplines of the basic medical science, including: Human physiology, pathology and pathophysiology, anatomy and embryology, medical immunology,

biochemistry and molecular biology, neurobiology, pathogen biology, cell biology, medical genetics, pharmacology, radiology , and forensic.

 Evaluation subjects：Selected 12 second-level disciplines of the basic medical science from 30 + medical colleges and universities.

 Evaluation index： 32 indexes，and inducted into 3 constructs: research team, scientific research and education outcomes, and finally gave a overall evaluation based on 100 percent induction

 Data collected from：Web pages from each college and university, the Science and Technology Development Center of the Ministry of Education, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the ministry of Science and Technology, the National Top-Level Courses Project resource network, Web of Science, etc.

Foreign Medical Teaching Material Center of the Ministry of Education

Organize experts and professors on each subject to evaluate foreign teaching materials, and recommend these materials to medical schools nation wide based on the evaluation.

Incorporated with other higher education libraries to develop foreign medical teaching materials center, projects include: the domestic and foreign pathophysiology teaching material comparison research, the domestic and foreign pharmacy teaching material comparison research, the domestic and foreign biochemistry teaching material

comparison research. Gathering professors, scientific researchers from basic medical schools, school library, etc.

The library development committee

Starting from 2005, the PUHSL formed a library development committee, chaired by the principal in charge, to guide the development of the library. Other committee members include all the management levels from each division of the school and affiliated hospital library. Effectively improve library development.

The committee meeting is held once every year. The 5^th meeting was held on Jan. 10, 2011.

Enhance the standard of library development and management, and strengthen the resources sharing between libraries and each affiliated hospital library.

Affiliated hospital librarian trainings

• Holds affiliated hospital manager meeting periodically, discuss joint resources purchase, joint reader services, and joint borrowing and returning, etc.

• Conduct job training and technical support. Cataloging, circulation, and periodical system

• E.g.: Nov.18-29, 2010，Gave Chinese and foreign cataloging system trainings to 5 affiliated hospital that did not join Unicorn system

(Stomatology hospital, The 6^th hospital, Cancer hospital, People’s hospital, and The 3^rd hospital), greatly improve the development of joint document resource sharing between libraries and affiliated hospitals.

Joint information literacy education

Information management and information system (medicine) professional internship education base. From 2005 to 2011,

provides internships via library projects to medical information students from Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Binzhou Medical University, and

Shanxi Medical University.

Incorporated with libraries in north China area to conduct information literacy education courses. Edit teaching materials, and produce teaching video CD.

• CADAL projects：University digital library international cooperation project (2010 - ). Currently is digitizing Chinese and English books published prior to 1964.
