Colonialization and Globalization:
Musical Change and Its Factors among
Taiwan Aborigines Based on the Observations
Made by Musicologists during the Japanese
Colonial Period

Abstract: Musicologists left first-hand observations on the musical change among Taiwan aborigines in their fieldwork reports. Using these reports as its basic data, this paper proposes that musical change among the Taiwan aborigines was mainly caused by three overlapping factors, namely, Japanese colonial rule, global technological inventions, and interaction with the Taiwanese and Japanese in the plain areas.
Japanese colonial rule mainly consisted of three aspects: suppression, education, and utilization of natural resources. Suppression resulted in the prohibition and the eventual decline of aboriginal traditional music. Education in school and society forced the aborigines to learn Japanese school songs and military songs, and provided the conceptual tools for abo-rigines intellectuals to begin documenting and transcribing their own music; sightseeing on the island and abroad brought the aborigines in contact with foreign music; and the teaching of agricultural methods, group migrations, and the expulsion of old customs resulted in the changes in the music which was an integral part of aboriginal way of life. Utilization of natural resources brought convenient transportation system to mountain areas and drastically increased the frequency for aborigines to interact with musical culture and record industry in the urban areas; meanwhile the establishment of telecom-munication systems enabled the aborigines in mountain areas to enjoy the various kinds of music in radio programs.
Sightseeing, records, and radios are the three global technological inventions that have influenced the aboriginal musical life the most. These global technologies not only turned the aborigines into modern consumers, but their music was also represented and consumed as commodities through these global technologies. Moreover, due to these technologies as well as through daily contacts, there had been much interaction among the music of the aborigines and the Taiwanese and Japanese people in the plain areas. In addition, the fieldwork of the musicologists itself also provided another channel for aborigines to have contacts with new musical elements and global technologies.
