Narrative Understanding: Comments on Professor Ping-Hwa Chen’s

Article on “The Construction and Development of My Indigenous

Counseling Model"

Abstract

This paper is a response to Professor Ping-Hwa Chen's article on “The Construction and Development of My Indigenous Counseling Model” from the perspective of narrative understanding. In her article, Chen described five salient episodes, namely the choice of counseling psychology as a career, which is a causal narrative; developing a multicultural counseling, which is a reflective narrative; constructing and developing a Self-Other Coordination Counseling model, which is a generative narrative; re-developing and integrating religious/spiritual perspectives, which is an evaluative narrative; and future career path in counseling, which is a future narrative.

In her article, the causal narrative, reflective narrative and generative narrative formed a coherent story. However, the story did not stop there. In the fourth theme, the evaluative narrative introduced a tension and negative emotional tone into the story. It then expanded and transcended into Chen's story of her indigenous counseling development. Last, Chen ended with an uplifting note indicating that after her cultural reflection, undertakings, inheritance, twists and turns, and transcendence, her story will continue towards the possibility of more dialogues. In this paper, the writer believes that Professor Ping-Hwa Chen’s article is an inspirational story about the search for true self from the outside in by an intellectual/believer. In conclusion, this paper explains the significance of “self-settling” in the process of Professor Ping-Hwa Chen's lifelong academic pursuit.
