Subject Databases Loaded Onto Library Online Catalog

ABIIINFORM is Now Available

Having the Library's catalog at your fingertips is only the beginning. Two major databases are now being added to the library system. ABI/INFORM (1985 - present) and INSPEC (1989 - present) will greatly expand access to the material available in many subjects.

ABI/INFORM indexes 764 business and management journals and is updated monthly. Topics covered include accounting, data processing, human resources, real estate, international trade, advertising, law, sales, telecommunications, financial management, information management, banking, health care, insurance marketing, and taxation. This database will eventually be supported by BPO (Business Periodicals Ondisc), which is a full-text image system containing articles from nearly 300 of the journals indexed in ABI/INFORM.

ABI/INFORM is now available for public use through the Library Online Catalog. To search this database, select "connect to other databases" from the main menu. Then choose ABI/INFORM from the database menu. A complete list of journal titles indexed in this database can be viewed online, along with a thesaurus of subject terms used. Both of these can be found in the 'Library News' on the campus network. To get there, log on to your network account, type "news" at the "$" prompt, and scroll down to 'Library News.' From there you can browse the list, get a printout, or download the file to disk.

INSPEC, the secondmajordatabase, is updated quarterly and indexes more than 4,000 serial publications, including conference proceedings (1988-present). There are plans to include IEEE Standards in the future. This database covers physics, electrical engineering and electronics, computers and information technology. Our INSPEC loading program is undergoing final adjustments, and the database should be available to our users in the near future.

Following the move to campus, additional databases will be loaded directly onto the Library Online Catalog. One of these will be Periodical Abstracts, a bibliographic database of articles from 450 periodicals on the arts, consumer issues, literary reviews, business, current events, politics, commentary, education, lifestyles, computers, health, science, and more.

Collection Spotlight -- the CD-ROM Network

In addition to ABI/INFORM, INSPEC, and Periodical Abstracts available online via the library catalog, more than twenty additional databases will be accessed by means of a CD-ROM network. These databases will permit access to the wide-ranging literature of the University's programs. Some of the CD-ROM titles that have been selected are:

Reading Room News

Due to the lack of available meeting rooms, the Reading Room has been frequently occupied for meetings and seminars. Because this has been a problem, the booking of such activites is now limited to the morning hours as much as possible. Therefore, you can be fairly sure that the Reading Room will be available for research uses in the afternoons . .
