Americans and British people both speak English for sure. But there are actually some differences between American and British English. First, they sound quite differently. Americans like to link words as they speak. For example, you may hear an American say “ I gotta go” instead of “ I got to go,” and “Gotcha!” rather than “Got you!” British people, on the contrary, speak more clearly.

In American and British English, the same word may have different meanings. On the other hand, different words may mean the same thing. At the end of a meal with an American friend, you say “ May I have the check, please” but you would call a British waiter and say, “Can I have the bill, please?” Or, an American may tell you “I want to take a vacation” while British people would use “holiday” instead.

All these differences might be overwhelming (壓倒性的; 無法抗拒) for a student of English, but English is not alone. People speaking the same language develop their own habits of using that language when they do not live close to one another. Besides, languages are like living beings. They grow and change. On different lands, the same language can change in a different

way, and English is a perfect example. 49. The article is mainly about ________.
