Knowing how to carry on a good conversation is something of an art. Some people are masters at this art, while others are only amateurs. 46 There are ways to improve our conversation-making skills. 47

To begin a conversation, you need an opener or what you think of as an “excuse” to talk to someone. You could refer to the immediate environment, the weather, mutual friends or mutual work, or school experiences. 48

49 The techniques used here include asking follow-up questions or making follow-up comments, changing topics, showing agreement or disagreement with the other person, interrupting, or asking for clarification.

To end a conversation, you might also want to think of excuses. 50 In other words, they are said just prior to saying “Goodbye”.

With some practice, you’ll find your skills as a conversationalist develop quickly and that you’ll have more fun carrying on a conversation.

(A) It helps, for example, to break a conversation down into three simple parts: beginning, middle, and end.

(B) That’s all it takes to begin a conversation. (C) Most of us fall somewhere in between.

(D) The middle of a conversation will be more complicated.

(E) Such comments are sometimes defined as “pre-closing” sentences.

(A) I used to get upset with people who were late. I hated waiting for others and I would become angry with someone who didn’t show up on time. At work , I dislike coworkers who were late for meetings, or who turned in assignments late. I thought people like this were rude or irresponsible.

One day, I learned an old saying, “To err is human, to forgive divine.” I realized I should stop being so upset with other people. Looking back, I saw my anger had never made anybody change his ow her behavior. Instead, it just made me more upset and stressed out.

So I try to remain calm while waiting for people who are late. I always bring along a book to read or some work to do, just in case that the person is coming late. Of course, if he or she is on time, that is great. But if the person is late, I have something to do to kill time.

In addition, for assignments at work, I now give a due date that is a few days before the actual deadline. That way, even if people are a few days late, I can still get the report on time.

I also make a new rule for meetings: if people are late, they have to buy everyone their coffee or tea. From then on, people have always made it to meetings on time.

Now, I accept the fact that some people will always be late. Instead of getting angry, I’ve come up with some ways to deal with it.

One day it was announced to all the feelings that the island was going to sink to the bottom of the ocean, so all the feelings prepared their boats to leave. Love was the only one that stayed. She wanted to preserve the island paradise until the last possible moment. When the island was almost totally under, Love decided it was time to leave. She began looking for someone to ask for help.

Just then Richness was passing by in a grand boat. Love asked,” Richness, can I come with you

on your boat?” Richness answered, “I’m sorry, but there is a lot of silver and gold on my boat and there would be no room for you anywhere.”

Then Love asked Vanity for help, who was passing in a beautiful vessel. Love cried out, “ Vanity, help me, please.” “ I can’t help you.” Vanity said, “ You are all wet and will damage my beautiful boat.”

Next, Love saw Sadness passing by. Love cried out, “ Sadness, please let me go with you. “ Sadness answered, “ I’m sorry, but I just need to be alone now.”

Then, Love saw Happiness. Love asked Happiness to take her but Happiness was so overjoyed that he didn’t hear Love calling to him.

Love began to cry. Then she heard a voice say, “ Come Love, I’ll take you with me.” It was an elder, Love felt so blessed and ecstatic that she forgot to ask the elder his name.

When they arrived on land, the elder went on his way. Love realized how much she owed the elder. Love then found Knowledge and asked,” Who was he that helped me?”

“It was Time.” Knowledge answered.

“But why did Time help me when no one else would?” Love asked.

Knowledge smiled and with deep wisdom and sincerity, answered, “Because only Time is capable of understanding how great Love is.”

(C) Due to satellite photography and advanced GPS mapping of the earth’s surface, mapmaking is a dying art. In other words, navigation and travel have been greatly improved since the times when people depended on the accuracy of hand-drawn maps. Also, with accurate and high-resolution digital images and computer models, the odds of voyages going astray are now very low. Nevertheless, the idea that a world without man-made maps is better ignores one basic fact about maps in past times. The truth is that, not so long ago, maps were not only about getting from point A to point B but also a form.

Take the Leo Belgicus ( or the Dutch Lion) for example. The very first Dutch Lion was drawn by Baron Michael Aitzinger in 1583. In simple terms, the Leo Belgicus was a map of the

Netherlands. However, its feature was the Dutch Lion showing the provinces of the Netherlands

inside the body of a proud, roaring lion. See, Aitzinger was from Austria, and had traveled across Europe before settling in the Netherlands; Aitzinger loved his adopted country and wanted to capture the fighting spirit of the Netherlands, so he gave it a body of a fierce animal. It would have been difficult to use Aitzinger’s lion, or any of the several copies that were made over the next two centuries, for any kind of serious navigation. However, the map still tells us something about the attitudes of the people in the time it was created, and it’s a fine piece of artwork , too. No matter how accurate they are, satellite photos will never be able to be appreciated in the same way as old maps.

58. What is the Leo Belgicus?

(A) An advanced GPS mapping in which a Dutch lion is eating. (B) A high-resolution digital image on a map of the Netherlands. (C) Mainly a serious navigational tool.

(D) A map of the Netherlands in the shape of a fierce animal. 59. Which is the true statement about Michael Aitzinger? (A) He was not originally from the Netherlands.

(B) He was known for his navigation skills. (C) He is a supporter of computer models. (D) He was attempting to beat the roaring lion.

60. What is the writer’s opinion of modern navigational technology? (A) With the newer technology, our life is superior.

(B) It can never fully replace man-made maps.

(C) Maps and satellite photos go hand in hand and are closely connected. (D) It is not as accurate as older types of maps.

61. For what reason did Aitzinger choose a lion for the Leo Belgicus? (A) He supported people from the Netherlands.

(B) He was originally charmed by the body of the Dutch lion. (C) It was the first animal he saw when he arrived in Netherlands. (D) It was the animal that symbolized pride and strength.
