I am half way through my stay at the Uni ve1計tyof Pennsylvania. Life here is really excitiI1g. Everything is so new and i nter-esting.

One of tbe most exciting events I have

experienced here is Hallowe凹, tl1eghost festival. On 31 October, people dress in

strange costumes and small children ask you for candies. If}roudon

t give tl1em what

they want, these "little devils

will play tricks "on you. That's why they call it

trick

or treat’,.

It isn

t just the children that dress up. On Halloween, Superman wallced past me

and I saw a medieval lady jogging along

the road. I even saw a persm1 dressed as a

big dice just hanging around. It was really fun to see these things. To be honest, I would love the chance to dress in one of their strange costumes.

Ah 一onemore thing about Hallow-een. Guess what the most common

cos-tume for male students was? Yes, you

vegot

it! Ladies

clothing!

I met at least ten guys dressed in low cut,叮叮 shortskirts, high heels and lacy

stockings. You couldn't help laughing when

}

rou saw these “f臼nales” withthick hair· on

their· hands and legs, and heavy make-up on their unshaven faces-but some _of

them were really attractive!

In academic life, students here are

really hardworking and talented. Before

I arrived, I thought American students

didn't study at all and could only speak English.

Now I realize that I am completely wrong. Students study five hours a day and are always willing to ask and answer ques-tions in class. Many of them are good at

hinguages too一I’vem♀ t one person who

knows more than four languages and an-other who speaks perfect Mandarin.

The weather here is fine. It is autumn

right nm吭 Leaveshave turned from green

to yellow and red and there are squirrels

running among Penn

s ancient buildings. The environment is very pleasant and

beautiful.

However, it is pre仕ycold at night the te飢peratureusually falls below l0°C, and it will get colder. I tl1ink I

m going to expe rience the first white Christmas of my life.

Well圖 Done

The Estates M叫ementOffice has won the 1997 Golden Circles a,:vard, pre

sented by the International Facility Manage ment Association for outstanding

performanc巴, serviceand contribution to its

community.

This is the first time that a university has won the award and E卸IOis the first winner outside the US, joini時 companies like Hewlett-Packard and Baltimore Gas and Electric.

IFMA is the professional association for facility managers, with approximately

15,000 members in 40 countries. The Hong

Kong chapter is expanding and, with over 120 members, is the largest outside North

America.

Director Mike Hudson received the award in Dallas last month on behalf of his

staff.

This is an award for doing our job well;’he said,可ndit belongs to everyone in

EMO.’’

EMO staff care for every aspect of the

campus, fr

construc-tion, but it was their innovative approach to their task that impressed the judges.

For instance, the new staff and post-graduate campus housing allowed EMO to dispose of all leased accommodation,

sav-ing money and staff time previously spent

dealing with individual landlords. In build-ing services, the energy cost reduction

pro-gram with Hone﹜耐ellis expected to lower

electricity bills by 6% (See G凹的的, 6/11/96).

Behind the scenes, a new system monitors 80

pieces of equipment for vibration-the first sign

of failure. Instead of re

placing parts according to the maker's recommenda tion, EMO now replaces when needed, saving 20%

in labor and parts costs.

But EMO is more than systems, equip-ment and buildings. A strong emphasis on training and communi,

strong group of people.

Mr Hudson points to a

low staff turnover rate,

just 3.2%, and low accident rates, 25%

lower than UK universities. EMO staff

members are the source of many of the ideas for innovations.

Internal and external audits and surveys

help the staff stay in touch with their

per-formance.

We’ve asked people what they

staff.一andlistened to the answers;'MrHud son said. A recent survey of those who had made work requests found 97% satisfied with the service that they received.

EM O's task is even more important in a

new university. "Six years ago we had no his-tor

there was an acad-emy where a student labored day and night in pursuit of his

post-graduate degree. The poor· student was held in thrall by a domineering Professor, and spent much of his time performing

One d旬, whenhe was required to clean out the attic of the Pro-fessor's home, he sat muttering to himself:

There was a sudden sound lik巴 arushing wind. The attic began to glow with an eerie light. And, lo and behold, a large man-like

creature wearing Middle Eastern garb began to materialize in front of the .student. In a deep bass_ voice, the apparition said,「'es,I know I look like a clicl話, butI was dressed for a costume party as Robin Williams in Aladdin when I was imprisoned in that magic lamp.

Supported by coaches Dr Patrick Chai』

undergraduate students at the University of

Each team had to come up with a solution

recommendations.

in awe of the setting, faculty and fa-cilities at HKUST. Unfortunately, too often I

can

around campus dazed and confused That

s because the room numbering at HKUST is like some kind of ritual for new students. When the University has to develop a special

interactive software program to guide intel-ligent students to their classrooms, something is clearly amiss. Here's an idea: at the very least, why don

t room numbers also incorpo-rate the nearest lift number? Also, the maps around campus are very }ncomplete. Why doesn't the University take.some action to l'a-tionalize the numbering of lifts and rooms ?

The judges-company representatives and professors-asked us very difficult questions

Although we didn't make the final.round,

it was a valuable experience. Importantly,八!何 re

For anyone who thinks room numbering

within other rooms, when rooms are entered from two or more directions or when students steal the

directional signs. Faculty have even been known

to change the numbers on the doors to obtain 世tteroffices-or to ensure lucky numbers?
