Imagine a world where all people are paid equally for doing jobs to help other people in their community but no money changes hands. In 22 countries around the world, including Taiwan, people now help other community members with different tasks such as walking dogs, baking cookies, repairing bicycles, giving guitar lessons, painting houses, teaching a foreign language, and weeding gardens without the exchange of money.

In countries where time banks exist, people work for time instead of money. Each hour of a person's time is considered the same, regardless of age, ability, or wealth.

Each hour a person spends volunteering to help someone else earns one “time

dollar” of credit. These credits are kept in a computerized time bank. All members of the community time bank list services they offer on a website and search for services other people offer. When someone who has earned credit needs a job done, they can use their credit to hire another person to do that job. For example, a school teacher might spend her free time tutoring a student in science to earn time credit. When the teacher needs a ride to the airport because she cannot drive, she searches the time bank to find someone and pays for the service with her time dollars. The person who

(4)

gives her a ride earns credit, which he in turn uses to hire a person with computer skills to fix his computer. The cycle repeats itself as it continues to grow. Everyone involved feels good because they are helping others while they are being helped and everyone's work is considered equal.

The time banking movement is based on several principles: all people, regardless of their abilities, have something to do; work that helps people and improves

communities needs to be valued and rewarded; helping works better as a “two-way street” involving people both giving and receiving services; people helping people builds support networks; and every person deserves respect.

Dr. Edgar Cahn, active in the area of social justice for a long time, began the time banking movement in the U.S.A. during the 1980s. With many people in many

countries losing jobs today, time banking has become a popular and creative way for people who may have more time than money to get tasks done for free. Beyond doing tasks, however, time banking may also build closer social relationships among people while helping to rebuild communities in a very positive way.
