Somali pirates have released 26 hostages held for nearly five years in terrible conditions. Three died during the hardship. One of the survivors , Arnel Balbero , told a news reporter of his hopeless struggle.
In the northern Somali bush, he ate birds, wild cats and even rats -- anything that could keep him alive. Balbero was one of a 29 -man crew of the Taiwanese registered fishing boat, the Naham 3. Its crew of
fishermen came from different countries -- Cambodia, China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Taiwan , and Vietnam. Balbero spent four and half
years in captivity.
Balbero was sailing around the south of the Seychelles, very far from his home in the Philippines. On March 12, 2012, his boat came under attack from Somali pirates. But the Naham 3 was no t a merchant ship that belonged to a wealthy compan y. There was no available
ransom money. With few working for their release, these men were often called the “forgotten hostages.” After 1,672 days, Balbero’s severe hardship appears to be over, and he is soon to be reunited with his family in the Philippines.

The Great Wall is disappearing, brick by brick , section by section. Chinese authorities are taking action to protect the ancient defensive structure that snakes for 13,000 miles (21,000 kilometers) across northern China from cri minal d amage.
