Please summarize the entire research, teaching, or science and technology R&D and management work process (To be completed by the employee)
Prof. Carkin taught a two-credit hour Master/PhD level course, entitled, “METHODS OF TEACHING ENGLISH THROUGH DRAMA”, from Feb. 20 to March 19, 2012 at the Department of Foreign Languages & Literature, NCKU. The course met three times a week in a specially arranged classroom provided by the foreign language center. One PhD student and three master students took the course. At the end of the class, The class joined with a Freshman Conversation class taught by Dr. Kao Shin-Mei of the department. This was the students' practicum about how theories of drama in education could be used in a real classroom.
In addition to the course, Prof. Carkin was invited by Yunlin, Chiayi
and Tainan Regional Teaching Resource Center of National Cheng
Kung University to give four workshops at the following different
universities about how to use reader's theater in language

Through visiting these universities and working with the teachers and students there, Prof. Carkin had established close connection with some professors and administrators in these universities.
Prof. Carkin has also received invitation to come back to Taiwan next year to give speeches and teach courses from some of these universities.
During Prof. Carkin's visit to NCKU, he worked closely with Dr. Kao for a book about using drama to teach English in ESL/EFL contexts. Some teaching plans, video clips, photos, and students' responses from the classes have been collected as the data of the book.
Overall speaking, it is a quite short yet fruitful visit in NCKU.

(1)是否達到延攬預期目標?
Has the expected goal of recruitment been achieved?
Yes. Through taking Prof. Carkin's class and observing his teaching styles, our graduate and undergraduate students understood what drama can do in a language classroom, both from the aspect of teacher-to-be and language learning aspects.
(2)研究或教學或科技研發與管理的方法、專業知識及進度如何?
What are the methods, professional knowledge, and progress of the research, teaching, or R&D and management work?
Prof. Carkin had conducted several workshops with different groups of participants, including teachers, undergraduate English majors, and graduate drama majors. The workshops were all video recorded. These previous classroom data can serve as materials for teacher training and language learning. Prof. Carkin also passed his teaching handouts and course materials to the classes/departments he visited.

How have the research, teaching, or R&D and management results of the employed person given benefit to the project (or your unit)?
Prof. Carkin and Dr. Kao plan to write a teacher's manual about how to use various drama techniques in the language classroom. The outlines had been laid down and soon they will proceed the actual writing.
Prof. Carkin and Dr. Kao co-presented a research report at the TESOL 2012 Convention (March 27- 31, 2012), and conducted a full-day workshop in the pre-convention institute in TESOL 2102 convention. Prof. Carkin has been conducting real and on-line workshop for international participants.
Thus working with him is a previous experience for our faculty members to learn how to cooperate with international researchers/teachers in a project.

How has the employed person, during his or her term of employment, benefited your unit or the relevant domestic academic field?
Prof. Carkin prepared four different workshops for four different universities in Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Kinmen. We believe these units have greatly benefited from his teaching materials, working styles, and expertise in the field of drama-in-education.

Prof. Carkin had published an SSCI paper together with one of our faculty members. They will work together closely and write a book for language teachers.

Due to Prof. Carkin's duty with his original university, Southern New Hampshire University, he must return to teach for the spring quarter. Thus, we cannot continue hiring him. In fact, his schedule is usually very full all-year-round. If we plan to hire him again in the future, we will need to arrange the schedule much earlier.
