A study shows that many young Chinese can forgive the Japanese soldiers for what they did in China in the 1930s. Many other people might be angry about this. They might say that Japanese soldiers shouldn’t be forgiven. But forgiveness is not something that you give to other people. It’s something you give to yourself.

Mother Theresa once said, “If we really want to love, we must learn how to forgive.” Mahatma Gandhi said that forgiveness is something that only the strong can give, not the weak. They were both right. When somebody hurts you, you might feel angry.

You might want to hurt him or her in return. However, anger hurts nobody but you. Anger stops you from feeling free and happy. It also stops you from enjoying life. Therefore, to live a happy life, learning to forgive is important.

Everybody knows it is difficult to forgive others, especially if they haven’t told you they’re sorry. But being difficult doesn’t mean being impossible. Always remember that nobody is perfect, and anybody can make a mistake. As long as you can keep this in mind, you can get rid of bad feelings. After you learn how to forgive others, you will feel much better. You will finally be freed from the past and be ready for a bright future.

38. According to the author, forgiveness is something _____.

(A) one gives to other people instead of to oneself (B) one gives to oneself rather than to other people (C) strong people give to weak people

(D) weak people give to strong people

When the class was told we were going to visit a school for blind kids, I thought, “Oh boy! This isn’t going to be any fun.

How can we have fun with kids who can’t see?”

On the way to that school, my classmates and I talked about sports and television programs. We also chatted about video games and movies. All of a sudden, I felt sorry for those blind children who can’t do those things.

However, those bad feelings disappeared when I met Lucie and Freddy. The first thing Freddy did when we met was challenge me to a game of baseball! I was shocked when I heard about this idea. I thought, “How can they hit or catch the ball if they can’t see it?”

To my surprise, they did it. The baseball game, called beep baseball, totally meets their needs. Because the blind cannot see, the wonderful invention makes a beeping noise so that a player can hear it coming. When the player hits the ball, the two bases make a noise like a bee buzzing. The player has to touch the base before the person in the field picks up the ball.

When it was my turn, I covered my eyes and tried to play. It was harder than I thought. Lucie and Freddy played much better.

After the game, we became good friends. Through this experience, they have taught me that blind people are just like the rest of us. With the aid of some useful inventions, they can do what others do, too.

(B) The ball’s sound is so little that only the blind can hear it.

(C) The rest of the players must cover their eyes to play with the blind.

(D) Only the two bases can make a noise.

44. According to the passage, which of the following is true?

(A) The students came to teach the blind kids to play baseball.

(B) The blind kids didn’t want to play with the students at all.

(C) It was the first time that these students had visited the blind kids.

(D) The author chatted with the blind kids about video games and movies.

45. What did the author learn from the experience?

(A) Even blind people could invent wonderful things.

(B) Blind people could have fun just like most people.

(C) It was sad that the blind couldn’t watch ball games.

(D) Blind people have better hearing than most people.
