A scar may stay with us for our entire life. It can be ugly, and may cause others to judge us unfairly. But ___11___, it’s our own belief about scars that causes us the most harm.

Some researchers in the U.S. proved this through an unusual experiment. They gave participants temporary scars. After showing them their new scar, researchers secretly removed it. The participants did not know that; ___12___, they looked normal. The people were then sent to the waiting rooms of different hospitals to meet others. When ___13___ to the research laboratory, most participants reported that others were rude and unfriendly to them. This shows that our ___14___ about how we look can make a big difference in how we perceive the world.

Not all scars are physical, though. Some people carry emotional scars because cruel parents, classmates, or teachers have made them feel ___15___ to others. Although there is nothing we can do to change the past, we can control the way we look at scars and stop them from negatively affecting our lives.

The undersea world isn’t as quiet as we thought, according to a New Zealand researcher. Fish can “talk” to each other and make a range of 1 6 by vibrating their swim bladder, an internal gas-filled organ used as a resonating chamber to produce or receive sound.

Fish are believed to speak to each other for a number of reasons, such as to attract mates, scare off predators, or give directions to other fish. Damselfish, for example, have been found to make sounds to scare off 1 7 fish and even divers. Another discovery about fish sounds is that not all fish are 1 8 “talkative.” Some species talk a lot, while others don’t. The gurnard species has a wide vocal repertoire and keeps up a constant chatter. Codfish, 1 9 , usually keep silent, except when they are laying eggs. 三、文意選填(占10 分)

I have often thought it would be a blessing if each human being were stricken blind and deaf for a few days at some time during his or her early adult life. Darkness would make this person more 21 for sight; silence would teach this

individual the joys of sound.

Recently, I was visited by a very good friend of mine. I asked her what she had observed from a long walk in the woods.

“Nothing __22__,” she replied. Had I not been __23__ to such responses, I might have suspected her words, for long ago I became convinced that the seeing see little.

How was it possible to walk for an hour through the woods and see nothing worthy of note? I, who cannot see, find hundreds of things to interest me through just touch. I feel the __24__ __25__ of a leaf. In spring, I touch the branches of trees hopefully in search of a bud, the first sign of __26__ nature after her winter’s sleep. Occasionally, if I am very fortunate, I place my hand gently on a small tree and feel the happy quiver of a bird in full song.

It is human, perhaps, to appreciate little that which we have and to long for that which we don’t have, but it is a great pity that in the world of light, the gift of sight is used only as a mere convenience, rather than as a means of adding fullness to life.

If, by some miracle, I were granted three seeing days, I should divide the period into three parts.

On the first day, I should want to see the people whose kindness, gentleness, and __27__ have made my life worth living.

First, I should like to gaze long upon the face of my dear teacher, Mrs. Anne Sullivan Macy, who came to me when I was a child and opened the outer world to me. I should want not merely to see the outline of her face, so that I could cherish it in my memory, but to study that face and find in it the living evidence of the __28__ tenderness and patience with which she __29__

the difficult task of my education. I should like to see in her eyes that strength of character which has enabled her to stand firm in the face of the __30__ and that compassion for all humanity which she has revealed to me so often.

(A) plight (B) symmetry (C) awakening (D) delicate (E) sympathetic

(AB) grateful (AC) accomplished (AD) companionship (AE) accustomed (BC) in particular

21. _____ 22._____ 23. _____ 24. _____ 25. _____ 26. _____ 2 7._____ 28. _____ 29. _____ 30. _____

第一篇

The Japanese have long puzzled public health researchers because they are such an apparent paradox: They have the world’s lowest rates of heart disease and the largest number of people that live to or beyond 100 years despite the fact that most Japanese men smoke—

and smoking counts as one of the strongest risk factors for heart disease. So what’s protecting Japanese men?

Two professors at the University of California at Berkeley hoped to find out the answer. They investigated a pool of 12,000 Japanese men equally divided into three groups: One group had lived in Japan for all their lives, and the other two groups had emigrated to Hawaii or Northern California. It was found that the rate of heart disease among Japanese men increased five times in California and about half of that for those in Hawaii.

The differences could not be explained by any of the usual risk factors for heart disease, such as smoking, high blood pressure, or cholesterol counts. The change in diet, from sushi to hamburgers and fries, was also not related to the rise in heart disease. However, the kind of society they had created for themselves in their new home country was. The most traditional group of Japanese Americans, who maintained tight-knit and mutually supportive social groups, had a heart-attack rate as low as their fellow Japanese back home. But those who had adopted the more isolated Western lifestyle increased their heart-attack incidence by three to five times.

The study shows that the need to bond with a social group is so fundamental to humans that it remains the key determinant of whether we stay healthy or get ill, even whether we live or die. We need to feel part of something bigger to thrive. We need to belong, not online, but in the real world of hugs, handshakes, and pats on the back.

36. What is the best title of this passage?

(A The Sense of Belonging vs. Isolation (B) The Power of Social Connection (C) Differences in Japanese Americans (D) ) Heart Diseases and Their Causes 37. Which of the following is a finding of the two American professors’ study?

(A) Many Japanese men that lived up to 100 years were smokers.

(B) Japanese immigrants to America usually formed a tight-knit community.

(4)

(C) Those who often ate hamburgers and fries were more likely to fall sick.

(D) Westernized social life was related to the heart-attack rate of Japanese Americans.

38. Which of the following is an example of “something bigger” in the last paragraph?

(A) The universe. (B) A stadium. (C) A family. (D) The digital world.

39. What is the ratio of heart disease between Japanese living in Japan and Japanese Americans in Hawaii?

(A) 1 to 2.5 (B) 1 to 5 (C) 3 to 5 (D) 1.5 to 5

第二篇

Our perspective on life is framed by how we interpret the information we are exposed to. Take this joke for example:

The pessimist lost in a tunnel sees only darkness. The optimist next to him sees a light and believes it is the exit at the end of the tunnel. The realist next to him sees the light and knows it is a train coming toward them. The final perspective comes from the engineer driving the train. He sees three idiots walking on the tracks.

Unlike the attitudes of the people in the joke, the outlooks you have can often affect events that take place in your life. If you’re optimistic about the outcome of something you are doing, you are likely to be more persistent in attempting to reach that goal. If you don’t think it can be done, you’re obviously more likely to just give up.

“Optimism is the belief that good things will happen to you and that negative events are temporary setbacks to be gotten over.” This is the definition given by the Mayo Clinic. Many studies have shown that optimists live longer, healthier lives.

Additionally, their optimism helps them achieve success, feel better emotionally, and feel less stress than non-optimists.

Being optimistic is very different from being blindly optimistic. All of us have to have a good dose of realism in our lives, but there is no reason to view everything as a doom-and-gloom scenario. If you feel you are a pessimist, there are some positive things you can do to counter this trait.

For starters, you can actually discipline yourself to be more optimistic. Experts say that optimistic feelings will eventually follow if you simply act optimistically. At the beginning, you can fake it until you make it. To do this, avoid negative self-talk, and don’t dwell on things that are out of your control. Make friends with upbeat people, as optimism can be contagious.

Adopt a positive attitude and repeat positive affirmations to yourself throughout the day.

Unlike the men walking in the tunnel, you can change your view of life in a way that combines optimism with realism. Yes, you see a light and know that it is a train coming toward you. As a realist, you step off the track and let the train pass.

However, you’re able to remain optimistic because you know the train must have come from somewhere, and the exit you are seeking is just further down the line.

40. What is NOT found in the article?

(A) A humorous story. (B) A personal narrative. (C) Medical study findings. (D) Some useful advice.

41. The following proverbs are examples of optimism EXCEPT “ .”

(A) After a storm comes a calm (B) Failure is the mother of success

(C) Where there is a will, there is a way (D) Once bitten, twice shy

42. Choose one pair of words related to each other in the same way as “doom-and-gloom” and “upbeat”.

(A) negative and positive (B) champion and championship(C) perspective and outlook (D) drama and tragedy 43. What can be concluded from the passage?

(A) We can train ourselves and change our outlook on life for the better and brighter.

(B) Nothing can be done if you are born to be a pessimist.

(C) Most people are realists who see material comfort as their top priority.

(D) People telling jokes are optimists who take ups and downs in life well.

第三篇

In your life, you’ve probably met people with physical scars, as it’s easy to spot a bruise or a mark with your eyes. However, mental scars which people carry inside are often more painful.

The term mental scar refers to negative emotional effects people feel after a tragic event. Soldiers often develop deep mental scars which they carry for the rest of their lives. In combat, they see death and other terrible things they disapprove of. Years after the war, many soldiers may suffer from night terrors or acute stress disorder, which makes them feel angry, nervous, and

(5)

uncomfortable. People who suddenly lose a loved one may also have mental scars. For example, years after they may suddenly start crying after something triggers a memory of the person who passed away. Bullying and physical abuse are known to cause long-term mental scars in some people as well. These things can cause children to feel depressed and fearful all of the time. Even after the abuse has ended, many children are unable to shake off their feelings of sadness.

For fear of feeling worse, many people don’t seek help, but there are ways to deal with mental scars. One is to see a qualified therapist and let him know your problem. You could also try to deal with the issue yourself. The first step is admitting you have a problem. Next, you must identify the root of your problem. Once you know what caused your mental scars, you must make a decision to let go and move on with your life—because no one should suffer forever due to things that happened in their past.

Helen Keller was born a healthy baby in 1880. However, at nineteen months she contracted a disease that caused her to lose her sight and hearing. She was raised almost like a caged beast with no discipline or education because no one could

communicate with her. When Helen was six, her parents hired Anne Sullivan, a twenty-year-old teacher who had been blind herself, to teach Helen.

Miss Sullivan used a sign language that Helen could feel through her hands. At first Helen imitated the signs, but did not know that they had meaning. When she finally realized that the signs represented letters, and that letters formed words, and that words represented things around her, Helen became an eager learner. Soon, she and Miss Sullivan could “talk” to each other quite easily.

Despite Helen’s disabilities, she insisted on leading a productive life. She went to college with the help of Miss Sullivan, who translated books and lectures into sign language for her. Finally, Helen got a bachelor’s degree from a highly prestigious university. While in college, Helen wrote her autobiography The Story of My Life. Helen realized that she could help and inspire many people by writing. She wrote about disabilities, social issues, and women’s rights. She was so influential and accomplished that she received many honorary doctorate degrees from universities around the world.

Helen won many awards throughout her life for her ability to motivate people by her intelligence, hard work, and strength.
