I.
Dear all,
I’m happy to be the hostess of our eleventh annual class reunion. We’re going to have a special event this year. Do you remember the wooden box that we buried under the big tree in front of the schoolyard eleven years ago? Our English teacher Ms. Liao had asked us to write a letter to ourselves of the future, and then we put the letter in the wooden box. This year, we are going to open the box.
Unlike previous years, we will not be holding the reunion in a restaurant this time. We will meet in our old classroom this Saturday, 24 th December, at 2:00 p.m. Please bring a gift so that we can exchange gifts since it’s also Christmas Eve.
The good news is Ms. Liao is coming to our reunion this year. Even though she retired five years ago and has moved back to Australia, she will be flying to Taiwan just to participate in our get-together. I believe everyone is happy and grateful to know that she’s coming over to see us.
If you need any further information, please don’t hesitate to call me.
Sincerely,
Sharon Wu

Daniel Gruber, an English teacher from Hawaii, just finished a cycling trip around Taiwan on his bicycle. What made his journey different was that he collected trash along the way. He did that to make his own very small difference to the problem of litter on Taiwan’s beaches.
During the 12 stops from Kenting to Taipei, then south again to Kaohsiung, Gruber called on locals and anyone who cares about pollution to come help him.
These events under the name “Re-think” (RE-THINK, 重新思考) had a strong response with 15,000 Likes on their Facebook page. As an outdoorsman, Gruber has spent a lot of time on Taiwan’s coasts and mountains. He is a hiker, surfer,
and cyclist. All these activities have given him a love of
Taiwan’s natural environment, and a horror of the ugliness when people litter on these locations. He wanted to do something about it.
Gruber said that he would try and pick up trash whenever he was surfing, snorkeling, or hiking. A photo of him made a big splash on the Internet and received a lot of comment. In the photo, he was collecting trash when he was snorkeling. People started contacting him and asked why he was doing
that. From this spark, Gruber had the idea of using social media not just to arouse
awareness, but to actually get people to participate in collecting trash. Together with Jason Huang (黃之揚), he set up the RE-THINK Facebook page and started.
Besides cleaning the beaches, what else can we do to change the world? Daniel and Jason remind us how useful our hands can be. The first step is not to ask for a plastic bag or bring your own shopping bag when buying food or groceries. Although this may bring some inconvenience, it can change people’s habits little by little. Next time, when you buy food or groceries, just give it a try!

When I traveled to Japan, Jenny was my roommate from the U.S. Every time we ate outside, she just couldn’t stand the slurping sound around us. Like most westerners, Jenny thought slurping during the meal and holding your soup bowl to your mouth were not civilized. I tried to explain to Jenny that slurping was a sign to show the chef his food was good, especially when you ate ramen. However, Jenny never adapted to the food, the etiquette, or the culture.
She returned home within a month with a terrible experience.
In fact, eating among the locals is a memorable part of your trip. Don’t be a Jenny. If you don’t try to adapt to the local food customs, you might not fully enjoy yourself. Here are some table manners from other counties, and you might find them
interesting.
1. Never leave your chopsticks sticking vertically in a bowl of rice!
My mother used to tell me it was bad luck to stick your chopsticks into your rice. Even for now, when I see someone doing that, I just can’t help feeling uncomfortable. Many countries in Asia consider this taboo, including Thailand, Taiwan, Japan, China and Korea. The reason is because during funerals, bowls of rice with chopsticks sticking straight on them are offered to the dead.
2. Yes, you can slurp!
One of my favorite Asian food is noodles, Pho, ramen, Udon, soba...there are so many kinds of them. As Jenny’s story above, in Japan, slurping is considered polite. It also means the food is delicious. But be careful, slurping is not considered polite in all Asian cultures. In Thailand and in parts of China, it is accepted to slurp but not really encouraged. And in most western cultures, it is quite rude.

You might be surprised to learn that in some cultures, finishing all your food on your plate is a sign that your host/hostess does not give you enough food, and he/she will continue to serve you each time you clear your plate and drink your whole beverage. Filipinos,
Cambodians, Koreans, Egyptians and Thais will all think this. However, for Japanese people, finishing one’s plate and rice bowl means that you appreciate the meal. To sum up, if you are not sure which is right, just observe what others are doing.

(B) It’s not polite if you slurp during the meal, so try not to do this when you eat.
(C) It’s different from most western cultures, but you should respect it since you are in Japan.
(D) It’s not easy to slurp when you eat noodles, so you don’t have to do it if you can’t.
( ) 38. What does “Don’t be a Jenny” mean?
(A) If your name is Jenny, you should change another one.
(B) Try to get used to different cultures and manners, or you’ll miss lots of fun.
(C) Never go to Japan if you don’t like ramen, Udon, and soba.
