In most species including humans, males are physically larger than females. It is believed that this is as a result of males fighting for food or resources. 42 In some species, like turtles, spiders and birds of prey like eagles, however, the females are larger than the males. Scientists believe this might be because these species don’t fight very much.

43

Humans had typical gender roles in the past, but it’s common now for behavior of the sexes to be very different from the stereotype. 44 In the animal world, this is also common. In the case of the Emperor penguin, the male looks after the eggs while the female returns to the sea. 45

Unlike the gender of humans, which is determined before birth, some animals have the ability to change sex. 46 This is happening more frequently today, perhaps because of environmental pollution in the world’s rivers. Other sea animals like shrimp and oysters can also change sex.

(A) Fish often begin life as one sex, and then change to another sex later on.

(B) In fact, in these species it’s better for the females to be bigger because a larger female can lay and hatch more eggs.

(C) For example, today a father will be often the parent who stays home with the children, while the mother works outside the home.

(D) When the eggs are hatched, the male even feeds them milk from a gland in his throat.

(E) If males are bigger in size, it gives them an advantage in a fight.
