Please summarize the entire research, teaching, or science and technology R&D and management work process (To be completed by the employee)
Prof. Nishida is developing a new hydrogen production system for fuel-cell on vehicles by using dielectric barrier discharge plasma reactor. The system decomposes hydrocarbons in high pressure condition (p > 1.5 atm.) to produce hydrogen and carbon powders. The system is very compact, and hydrogen will be produced on the vehicle, directly fed to the hydrogen based fuel-cell.
Therefore, the energy for making liquid hydrogen, which is the recent popular technology, is not required and total energy efficiency of proposed system is much better than the popular methods used so far. The project is funded by the Energy Research Center of NCKU. The system is now underway and the decomposition of hydrocarbon has been succeeded to obtain hydrogen in good decomposition efficiency (ex. 110 kJ/L for methane). These systems have been applied to obtain patents in Japan and Taiwan, and the improved one to Taiwan and USA. One of the applications in Taiwan has been approved on June, 2014.
He had been invited to give an Invited Talk at the Int. Conf. on Advanced Oxidation Tech. for Treatment of Water, Air and Soil, AOTs-19, Nov. 17-21, 2013, San Diego, California, USA, and at the 23rd Int. Optoelectronics Exposition, OPTO Taiwan, June 17-19, 2014, at TWTC, Taipei. He also attended the International Conferences to give talks such as, APSPT-8, Dec. 20-22 (2013), Hsinchu, and The Int. Conf. on Plasma Medicine, ICPM-5, May 18-23 (2014), Nara, Japan.
He has published papers in the International Journal, such as Rev. Sci. Instrum. 84, 023502 (2013) and J Exp Clin Med 2013; 5(1): 5-11. Physics of Plasmas 20, pp.1021091-6 (2013) and Rev. of Sci. Instr. 85, 023507 (2014). He has submitted two papers to IEEE, Plasma Science on hydrogen production related results (under reviewing).

He also developed the concept of high-field plasma phenomena which is a new concept different from the popularly used plasma research areas. He actively applied this phenomenon to decompose toxic chemicals, sterilize bacteria and trapping micro dust particles. The research results have been applied to refrigerator for prolonged preservation of fresh plants and to air conditioner for cleaning the air and also to the medical field for mainly sterilization, which are now under collaborations with other universities in Taiwan. He is also involved in the development of air cleaner productions for sale, collaborating with company in Taiwan.
He supervised graduate students to conduct research group meetings, at least once in a week, to give advices to students for improving their research works.
In teaching, he is on the way of class lectures in “Introduction to Applied Plasma Phenomena”, the text book of which is written by Prof. Nishida and is impress by Wu-Nan Book Inc., Taiwan, and
“Special Topics on Plasma Physics” at Institute of Space and Plasma Science Center.

(1)是否達到延攬預期目標?
Has the expected goal of recruitment been achieved?
Prof. Nishida (西田靖) has effectively advised students and improved their research works on laboratory plasma experiments. Also, Prof. Nishida has applied his plasma technology expertise to develop hydrogen generation device for fuel cell, which is a new area of technology research in NCKU. In addition one of the Patents related to hydrogen production has been approved by Taiwan Patent Office (經濟部智慧財產局).

What are the methods, professional knowledge, and progress of the research, teaching, or R&D and management work?
Prof. Nishida is a world expert in plasma experiments and industrial applications of plasma technology. He will greatly help to establish the new expertise and technology in NCKU.
(3)受延攬人之研究或教學或科技研發與管理成果對該計畫(或貴單位)助益如何?
How have the research, teaching, or R&D and management results of the employed person given benefit to the project (or your unit)?
After joining NCKU, Prof. Nishida has worked on the experimental plasma researches at PSSC, and made many marvelous results published into international fields. I am confident that with continuing appointment, Prof. Nishida can make new researches and valuable results that can help NCKU to become a Top University in the world.
(4)受延攬人於補助期間對貴單位或國內相關學術科技領域助益如何?
How has the employed person, during his or her term of employment, benefited your unit or the relevant domestic academic field?
Prof. Nishida will add new capability of plasma experiments and industrial applications of plasma technology to Taiwan industries in addition to PSSC and NCKU. There is no other similar

experimental expertise in other Taiwan universities.

Please describe the specific work performance, or the results of research, teaching, or R&D and management work:
Prof. Nishida is a world-leading plasma experimentalist. I expect Prof. Nishida will greatly improve the plasma experimental researches not only at NCKU but also in the world wide and train our students with better experimental skill and physics understanding. He will also introduce industrial applications of plasma technology, in particular for clean energy research. I am confident that he will achieve new experimental results.
