Recently, virtual reality (VR) is regarded as one of the most helpful technologies. Aside from using VR to play video games, people with different backgrounds are well aware of its 13 . For example, a hospital in Los Angeles helps their patients release stress and reduce pain using this technology. Patients can visit wherever they want by 14 a machine with special glasses on their head when they are lying in bed. Through VR provided by the machine, it can ease patients’ fear and also lower the cost of care in the hospital.
Moreover, a theater in England has turned VR into a great helper for actors to 15 for their roles. That is, actors can “live in” the life experience of their characters with the aid of VR.
After their VR experience, the actors indicated that it was a terrific way to better understand the 16 of the play from the views of the characters. Without VR, they would not have had such an interesting and helpful experience.
It also seems very exciting and useful to introduce VR into classroom instructions. 17 , in history class, students may experience historical events in person, such as being soldiers in the French Revolution. There is no doubt that a vivid scene right in front of students is much more fun and useful than a long list of definitions and descriptions in books.

Christmas is coming. If you are asked to choose between the Christmas gift of your dreams and a perfect gift for your parents, what will you choose?
It is commonly believed that 18 . This idea was put to the test in the video created by UP TV. A dozen children from low-income areas in Atlanta, America were presented with a gift for themselves and a gift for their parents. With both gifts sitting in front of them, the kids were told they could only pick one. 19
The producer of the video is very amazed and touched by the children’s response. It is a perfect example of the UP TV’s “ 20 ” project this year—to encourage people to give away something they want to people in need rather than keep it for themselves.
18. (A) parents always put their children first (B) children should take their parents’ advice (C) kids today care more about getting than giving (D) parents and children should learn from each other
19. (A) Naturally, 80% of the children wished to keep both gifts.
(B) Obviously, 80% of the children picked what they needed.
(C) Interestingly, 80% of the children could hardly make the decision.
(D) Surprisingly, 80% of the children chose to give their parents a gift.
20. (A) Give it Up (B) Make it Up (C) Bring it Up (D) Look it Up

Chester Greenwood was born in Farmington, Maine in 1858. After getting a new pair of ice skates as a gift, Greenwood couldn’t wait to ice skate. But the terribly cold winter in Farmington was so hard on his ears that he couldn’t stay outside for long. He tried covering them with his hands, but that made it difficult to skate. He also tried wrapping a scarf around his head, but the soft and thick sheep hair made his ears uncomfortable.
To solve this problem, Greenwood created something to protect his ears by shaping two pieces of wire into circles to cover his ears. He then joined them with a longer wire so he could wear them on his head. To keep out the cold winter air, his grandmother helped sew soft cloth to the inside and fur to the outside of the circles.
When Greenwood skated, wearing his newly invented ear warmers, his friends laughed at him in the beginning. But when they realized that the hands-free ear warmers made him able to stay outside for longer skating, they loved the idea immediately. They even began begging him to make some for them.

Speaking of candies, people of all ages may not be able to say no to these colorful Gummy Haribo Bears. Hans Riegel, the father of Haribo, started his candy kingdom from a small town in Germany in 1922. Hans Riegel passed the small company to his son in the 1940s, who made a wide expansion after the takeover. Over the years, the company had opened hundreds of stores in different countries around the world, such as the UK, the US and Brazil. Its 15 factories made 100 million Gummy Bears every day.
To attract buyers’ attention, the company bought many advertisements on TV to promote the products and the advertisements kept playing all the time. Easy-to-remember phrases were made to make people link Haribo to happiness in life. For example, Haribo’s advertisement in Germany used “Haribo macht Kinder froh–und Erwachsene ebenso” (“Haribo makes children happy–and adults as well”) to attract the audience. This policy worked out very well.
The first Gummy Bears were called “dancing bears.” Hans Riegel chose bears as their candy models because bears were popular animals in the 19th century. At that time, it was common that bear trainers took their bears to do some tricks in the streets, including dancing, to earn money. In the 1960s, the dancing bears were changed into smaller and fatter sizes and were renamed “gold bears,” which were known as today’s Gummy Bears. Now, besides bears, customers can also buy other shapes of Gummy candies, such as snakes, cola bottles and pears.
25. What does a wide expansion mean in the first paragraph?
(A) Increasing the number of shops.
(B) Adding new products to the production line.
(C) Moving the company from a small town to a big city.
(D) Making many new advertisements to catch buyers’ eye.
26. What can we learn about Haribo from the reading?
(A) The business of Haribo was started by Hans’ father.
(B) In the German language, “Haribo” means “happiness.”
(C) Hans Riegel changed the name and the size of the Gummy Bear.
(D) “Gold bears” are more similar to today’s Gummy Bears than “dancing bears” are.
27. From the reading, what made customers start to get interested in Haribo?
(A) The prices.
(B) The tastes.
(C) The shapes.
(D) The advertisements.

A lot of people visited the art museum in Milton Keynes in England, spending hours studying the exhibits in the museum carefully. The Swiss artists Bächli and Eric Hattan must be surprised at the success of their latest exhibition.
“No, nobody has found it yet,” said Katharine Sorensen, the manager of the museum, when she was asked about the news that the local artist Tomas Georgeson had hidden a check of
$12,000 somewhere in the museum. “We’ve had hundreds of people looking everywhere, but nobody has seen it yet, if it is actually there.”
Tomas Georgeson, famous as a painter, knew the Milton Keynes Museum very well because he had worked there before. He said that the check was not hidden “on or around” any of the exhibits and asked visitors to be careful not to break any exhibit. He said that he had not told the museum about this but he hoped the check could make this museum become “a cultural attraction.”
Tomas’s wish has come true. The museum has hired more workers to protect the exhibits.
“We have truly seen more people in, which is great,” said Sorensen.

Have you ever spent a long time waiting in line? The answer is definitely “yes” for almost everyone. Waiting cannot always be avoided, and it is unpleasant and boring. But, in the service industry, it is in the best interest of the management to make sure that customers are well-served and satisfied with the service. Therefore, how to make the waiting experience less painful for customers has become one of the most serious problems for managers in the service industry.
Luckily, some interesting studies on waiting behavior provide some helpful principles. First, there should be clear instructions. The shop can provide clear rules such as where to start the line and how to order while waiting in line. Clear rules decrease the possibilities of misunderstanding.
Second, staff should present positive attitudes towards customers. Staff should be trained and required to smile at all times and treat people politely. Smiling seems to always have the magic touch. Smiling at customers in a long line is likely to make them forgive and forget the painful waiting experience. Third, staff should fill the waiting time. The filled time passes more quickly than the unfilled. For example, a famous steamed dumpling shop designs a clear window through which customers can observe or take pictures of how the food is made. Having something to do keeps them busy, so they may feel that time passes quickly.
Many shops and restaurants have benefited from the principles mentioned above. Thanks to findings of the studies and experiences of real cases in the service industry, more and more shops and restaurants have a chance to make their service better and their business stronger.

People may begin to enjoy writing for various reasons. For Yoshiko Uchida, it all began with Brownie, a five-month-old puppy. So excited was Uchida by Brownie’s arrival that she started keeping a journal. For the next several years, Uchida wrote about all the wonderful things Brownie did and the progress he made.
Yoshiko Uchida grew up in the 1930s in the US. Her parents provided a loving and happy home for Uchida and her sister. They also attracted a stream of visitors to their home, many of whom later found their way into Uchida’s stories. The visitors were usually Japanese students or new arrivals to the US who had no family there. One visitor who later appeared in several of Uchida’s stories was Mr. Toga. She and her playmates loved to joke about how mean Toga was and how funny it sounded when he talked with false teeth making noise all the time.
Uchida also included in her stories some of the places she visited and the experiences she had. One of her favorite places was a farm her parents took her to one summer. They fed the mules that later pulled a cart with Uchida and her family riding in it, staring up at the stars shining in the night sky. Uchida, who lived in the city, had never seen such a sight. The images of that day stayed with her long after the summer visit ended, and she used them in several of her stories.
The experiences Yoshiko Uchida had growing up and the people who came into her young life became part of the world she created in over twenty books for teenagers, books such as The Best Bad Thing and A Jar of Dreams. Because of such books, we can all share just a little bit of the world and the times in which she grew up.
38. From the reading, which of the following is the LEAST likely to appear in Uchida’s books?
(A) The Japanese students.
(B) The writer’s memories.
(C) The journal about dreams.
(D) The writer’s favorite farm.
39. From the reading, which of the following is true about Yoshiko Uchida?
(A) Uchida loved Mr. Toga because he was nice.
(B) Uchida’s books were mainly written for adults to read.
(C) Uchida recognizes herself as a Japanese instead of an American.
(D) Uchida’s stories enable readers to learn something about her childhood.
40. From the reading, which of the following is true about the visitors to Uchida’s family?
(A) Some of them usually invited Uchida’s family back.
(B) Most of them came to the US alone without family.
(C) Most of them went on a farm trip with Uchida’s family.
