STUDENTS COMPETE FOR EXCELLENCE IN TECHNICAL COMMUNICATION
The Langua e Centre at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology will hold its fou rtE annual Excellence in Technical Communication Contest on Friday, 7 June at the Leung Yat Sing Lecture Theatre (Lecture Theatre F) from 10:OOam to 12:30pm.
The event aims to raise students’ awareness of the importance of good communication skills for technical professionals. It is sponsored for the second year running by Motorola Semiconductors Hong Kong Limited.
In the contest, four teams of undergraduates will give an oral presentation of a technical report. The finalists were selected from 625 undergraduates who took a 15-week, credit-bearing Technical Communication Skills course, designed to enhance their ability and confidence in presenting technical work in English.
The teams will be judged by a panel of adjudicators, including representatives from Motorola, the Language Centre and the School of Science.
“One cannot emphasize enough the importance of good communication skills in various technical fields,” says Mrs Lynne Flowerdew, senior instructor at the Language Centre and coordinator of the course.
“Engineers in the US and the UK are required to take at least one course on technical communication before they can become chartered engineers. Preparation of this kind is extremely useful in enabling our students to compete in Hong Kong’s international arena once they graduate,” says Mrs Flowerdew.
