Do you often get itchy feet? If so, you may have a case of athlete’s foot. This common skin disease affects about 15 percent of the global population, and about one in five adults. It’s not life- threatening, but it’s certainly annoying, and while it’s pretty easy to catch, it’s hard to get rid of.

Athlete’s foot is caused by a number of fungi. They are contagious, and are transmitted by contact. In most cases, people get athlete’s foot from shared areas where they go barefoot, such as bathrooms, swimming pools, changing rooms, and the like. The fungi can also infect towels, socks, and shoes, meaning these have to be treated to stop the problem from coming back. The reason the feet are usually infected is that the fungi can only survive in warm, moist areas. Your feet are often insulated by socks and shoes, which makes them sweaty and thus the perfect place for fungi.

To prevent infection, you can keep your feet dry, wear socks that allow them to breathe, and avoid tight shoes. It’s also a good idea to wear sandals while walking through the

communal areas mentioned above. The fungi can also be killed using bleach.

Once an infection sets in, it can be removed by several creams and other medicines. However, getting rid of athlete’s foot is a long process. If you get it, make sure you treat all your socks and shoes as well, otherwise the fungi will survive and come back to haunt you. In severe cases, doctors can prescribe stronger medication that usually comes in tablet form.

With athlete’s foot, the best thing to do is take steps to prevent infection. Following the steps above will make sure you never have to deal with this troublesome problem.

It is estimated that 24,000 people around the world are struck by lightning every year. Luckily, most hits are indirect. However, around ten percent prove to be fatal. Back in 1994, Cicoria, a surgeon, was using a payphone during a storm. He heard thunder in the distance, and suddenly a blinding flash of light came out of the phone. something had changed about him, because he kept hearing a melody that he had never heard before. Try as he might, he could not stop hearing it.

Cicoria believed that the only way to get the song out was to learn how to play it. He spent the next 12 years learning how to play the piano. Traveling to a far-off destination is usually a great experience. However, packing is never a pleasure. To make sure you’re prepared for your next vacation, follow these packing tips.

Although you might have an urge to look your best while abroad, you don’t need to bring every item in your wardrobe. Over-packing is a big problem, as not only might you shove unnecessary items in your luggage, but you may even reduce the amount of space you could use to bring back souvenirs. Real necessities include underwear and socks for every day of the vacation. Instead of packing one pair of pants for each day, pack one for every two days. Also be sure to wear the same outfit to your destination and back. As for shoes, two pairs are sufficient. Take a set of walking shoes and, depending on the location, either dress shoes or sandals.

Putting your outfits in a suitcase can be a bit of a task. To maximize space, first put all your socks inside your shoes; then pack these at the bottom of your suitcase. Roll items that won’t wrinkle such as jeans and cotton shirts. Dress shirts should be folded, though. Take your rolled clothes and place them next to the shoes. Then place all folded clothes on top. If you have any open spaces, store your underwear and belts in them. Close and you’re ready to go.

If you follow these tips, you’ll be able to focus on the vacation instead of stressing out about preparation.

74. What is the purpose of the passage?

(A) To advise on what to prepare for a camping trip. (B) To teach people how to pack smartly for a trip. (C) To explore what causes people to overpack. (D) To give tips on how to pack and unpack quickly.

75. According to the passage, what should you bring if you’re going on a four-day business trip?

(A) Two pieces of underwear. (B) Two pairs of pants.

(C) Three pairs of socks. (D) A pair of walking shoes and sandals. 76. According to the passage, how can one make the most of one’s suitcase space?

(A) By folding every clothing item neatly.

(B) By rolling pants and shirts that wrinkle easily.

(C) By storing jeans and belts in open spaces. (D) By putting all the socks in the shoes.

77. According to the passage, what is the right way to organize items in your suitcase (from the bottom to the top)?

(A) Folded clothes → rolled clothes → shoes. (B) Rolled clothes → folded clothes and shoes. (C) Shoes → folded clothes → rolled clothes. (D) Shoes and rolled clothes → folded clothes. VII. 翻譯 (請書寫於答案卷上,一題兩分),共 8 分
