Message from

the President

We at HKUST anticipate the start of a new school year, full of excitement. This is the time we welcome new and returning students back to campus and we meet you - prospective students. Why should this fill us with such excitement? It is our dream to help young people like yourselves to fulfill your dreams. So, this is the time we ask most fervently, most sincerely, and most urgently: What is your dream?

Dreams are our heart’s desires. They are what we long to pursue. Having dreams is the key to happiness. Working toward making one’s dreams come true is the key to achieving satisfaction in life and success in your chosen career.

To many of us here at HKUST – faculties, students and staff, joining the world’s top young university and one of the most international in the region, is a dream come true. We people at HKUST are dreamers ourselves. Two decades ago, this University started on a dream. Today, we are the No. 1 university in Asia (for the second year in a row) and we are the third among the world’s young universities (under the age of 50). These remarkable achievements have earned HKUST the nickname “the Miracle University”.

If HKUST is defined by anything, it is defined by the boldness of its action and vision. We look for students who are dare to dream, who are ready to make decisions and to act on their dreams. We encourage our students to be bold, to dream big, to work hard and to make their dreams happen. We have created an environment that assists our students to achieve their full potential and turn aspirations into realities. In other words, we are here to help our students crystallize their visions. If you do not yet know your dream, keep your eyes and mind open. It will come. Like a flower blooming, like a plant developing from a seed, your own personal, authentic dream will develop through your experiences. Come and explore yourself at HKUST – where miracles happen and dreams come true.

Message from

Associate Provost and

Dean of Students

Choosing the right university and the right program are important decisions. We have prepared this admission brochure with two purposes: to open the HKUST door for you, and to introduce you to the vast horizon of

possibilities that this University has to offer. Our new four-year undergraduate curriculum has both breadth and depth, offering students ample time and opportunities to participate in both academic studies and a wide array of developmental and enrichment activities. The new curriculum allows students to explore and gain a better understanding of various academic areas before they decide on their study paths. Supported by our team of dedicated and caring academic advisors, students will be given advice and guidance at different levels and stages while they journey through their university lives.

In the years to come, the University will continue to advance its programs, keeping pace with global advancements and global trends. We have the flexibility and the expertise to nurture generation after generation of globally competitive, professionally competent and socially responsible graduates.

We sincerely hope this brochure not only provides all the information you need, but also conveys our enthusiasm and commitment to offer HKUST students the best all-around education possible. May this Guide help you make the best decision possible!

completing the first year. Students in the School of Business and Management will declare their Major after completing the first year, or at the end of their second year.

In this way, students have ample time to develop a thorough understanding of the subject and explore their interest before committing to a particular study path.

HKUST is a truly School-based university. Prospective students only need to choose the School they wish to join at the admission stage. In the first year, students will take University Common Core courses as well as School foundation courses to broaden their knowledge and establish a solid foundation. Students in the Schools of Science, Engineering, and Humanities and Social Science will declare their Major after

Each Common Core broad area has clearly defined learning outcomes that are presented as statements of what students might be able to do with what they have learned.

All undergraduates will complete the same set of Common Core requirements regardless of their Major program of study. Students are expected to complete the majority of the Common Core credits in Years 1 and 2.

Academic Advising

A comprehensive academic advising scheme is put in place in each School to assist students in identifying and achieving their academic, professional and personal goals.

Academic advising can make a significant contribution to success in education. Advisors help students become more active and

self-regulated learners so that they can benefit to the greatest degree possible from their university experience. The scope of academic advising is much broader than merely helping students choose the right courses or decide on a Major. It is a “walk-with-you” journey during which dedicated, caring and qualified mentors can enhance students’ learning experiences. Students may seek advice from Faculty Advisors or

Counselors on issues facing them at different stages of their studies.

Curriculum

Students in the Schools of Science, Engineering, and Humanities and Social Science will enter their Major programs after one year. In the School of Business and Management, most students will enter their Major programs after two years; students in Global Business, Economics and Finance, and Quantitative Finance programs will enter their Major programs after Year 1. In addition to the standard single-major track, other academic options such as double-major and major-minor combinations are also possible.

They create education value by exposing students to complex issues that require analysis from multiple

perspectives.

http://science.ust.hk/

The School of Science is a dynamic environment. The curriculum comprises a wide spectrum of programs that are continuously updated to incorporate the latest technological advancements and scientific developments. Our lecturers thrive on collaboration, relying on interaction with colleagues and students to spark their creativity. Our goal is to equip the next generation with the skills they will need to be independent thinkers, competent professionals, and inspirational leaders.

School of Engineering

http://www.seng.ust.hk/

The engineering discipline prides itself on innovation and creativity in providing solutions for industry to meet the needs of society. Making a significant contribution on a global scale has always been a priority for HKUST’s School of Engineering. Our high international rankings confirm our standing as a leading academic force. The School has attracted a critical mass of outstanding faculty and researchers, including 27 IEEE Fellows, to undertake cutting-edge and quality research projects as well as to induce ingenious pedagogies.

School of Business & Management

http://undergrad.bm.ust.hk/

The key missions of the HKUST Business School are to advance the frontiers of global business knowledge; develop business leaders; and contribute to the social and economic

transformation of the Asian region. To enlighten the next generation of young leaders, we have pioneered a holistic approach to our undergraduate education - an education that emphasizes

arousing intellectual curiosity, sharpening logical reasoning and cultivating enterprising spirit in compassionate and forward-thinking individuals who dare to dream and who want to work toward

making a positive impact on the world.
