New Information Source for
Manufacturing Industry
A database of manufacturing and technological resources in southern China and Hong Kong has been created by the Research Centre at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The database contains over 20,000 records covering Hong Kong and 21 cities in southern China. Access to the database is open to the public and free of charge at the present time.
"This database differs from existing electronic directories or databases because of the in-depth information it provides. This information will help industrialists explore investment and collaboration opportunities in southern China and Hong Kong," said Prof Jay C. Chen, Director of the Research Centre.
Establishment of the "Manufacturing and Technological Database in Southern China and Hong Kong" was supported by the Industry Department with funding of $6.24 million.
The database is in two parts, the first providing statistics by city on infrastructure, economy, manpower, education, and so on. The second part provides detailed information on individual organizations,
including manufacturing capability and productivity, factory size, etc. It also identifies organizations certified for quality assurance. Users can search different areas of the database according to their own needs.
The database can be accessed on the World Wide Web at
http://rcms02.ust.hk/mtdb. Username and password have been temporarily set as guest and commuser respectively. "Users are welcome to give us comments on the database," said Prof Chen. "We are hoping to collect as many opinions as possible so as to improve the database to meet the community's requirements."
