Nobel Laureates to Lecture at HKUST
Three Nobel Laureates will highlight a Distinguished Lecture Series in Science sponsored by the School of Science of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology from August to November.
The first lecture in the series will be given on 8 August by Professor J. Robert Schrieffer of Florida State University, who will use the phenomenon of superconductivity to illustrate the relationship between scientific developments and the creation of forefront technologies. Professor Schrieffer received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1972 and was recognised for his contributions to the microscopic theory of superconductivity. He is currently a University Professor at Florida State University and is also serving as Chief Scientist for the University’s National High Magnetic Field Laboratory.
The second lecture will be delivered on 25 August by Professor Nicolaas‘ Bloembergen of Harvard University, who received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1981. He will speak on “Laser-Material Interactions: Fundamentals and Applications”.
Concluding the series will be Professor Rudolph Marcus of the California Institute of Technology, who will discuss “Electron Transfer Reactions in Chemistry and Biology” on 7 November. Professor Marcus was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1992 for his studies of electron transfer reactions that underlie processes such as photosynthesis and corrosion.
All lectures will be open to the public. Summarised details are as follows: 1. Professor J. Robert Schrieffer (Nobel Laureate in Physics)
