HKUST STUDENTS BEAT TOP SCHOOLS AT INTERNATIONAL COMPUTER CONTEST
After placing first at the local ACM computer programming competition, HKUST students went on to beat traditional heavyweights like Stanford and Columbia universities at the international finals held in the United States earlier this month.
The three-member team of computer science students placed 13th at the International Scholastic Programming Finals organised by the Association for Computing Machinery, or ACM, the leading professional society in computer science. A total of 38 teams from around the world competed at the finals held in Nashville, Tennessee.
“The team drew international attention to what we are doing here,” said Dr Michael Stiber, the team coach and assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science.
Dr Stiber said he was pleased by the students’ showing at their first international contest, particularly when considering who they beat.
The HKUST team consisted of three contestants and an alternate: Leung Ka Cheong, Lam Ka PO, Wong Wing Kin and Ngan Sai Fong.
