11/09/2013 Prof Tony F Chan Will Continue as HKUST President for Another Term
The Council of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) announced today that Prof Tony F Chan would continue to serve as the President of the University until 2019.
Dr Marvin K T Cheung, Chairman of the University Council, said he was delighted that Prof Chan would continue to lead the University as it progresses further into its third decade and embarks on the challenging journey to the next level of prestige and accomplishment.
"Under Prof Chan's leadership and working in partnership with the community and top global partners, the University is ready to stride forward in its vision to be a leading university with significant international impact and strong local commitment," Dr Cheung added.
Prof Chan assumed the Presidency in 2009. During his current term, HKUST has strengthened its position as a leading world university, adding numerous exchange partners and several strategic partners who are among the leading universities worldwide—resulting in new opportunities for faculty and students through global contacts and exchanges. In fostering an environment for creativity and excellence, Prof Chan has steered the University steadily ahead in its six key areas of development, as envisioned in its Strategic Plan 2011-16. Prof Chan also successfully oversaw the smooth transition to the four-year undergraduate degree system.
"I am honored to continue to serve this 'miracle' University that has risen so far so fast," Prof Chan said. "The years ahead will be highly significant in strengthening our presence locally, nationally and globally. I am looking forward to writing the next chapter of HKUST's incredible story together with the University community and all our supporters, partners, alumni and friends. While we never have high international rankings as a goal, I am heartened to see our international recognition at an all-time high."
Prof Tony Chan's main research interests are in mathematics, computer science and engineering. He has published over 200 refereed papers and is one of ISI's most cited mathematicians. Prof Chan was Assistant Director of the
Mathematical and Physical Sciences Directorate at the US National Science Foundation. He also served on the NSF Mathematical and Physical Sciences Advisory Committee and the US National Committee for Mathematics. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia, the President's Advisory Council of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, and the US Committee of 100. He is also a member of the Steering Committee of the Innovation and Technology Commission of the Hong Kong Government.
