HKUST to Offer Orientation Prooramme for First-Year Students
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) will offer an in-depth orientation programme for incoming undergraduates. It will comprise a range of activities, from academic counselling to sports competitions. Informational programmes will present the University’s philosophy, academic programmes, student services, and the new campus. Faculty and administrative staff will .participate in many of the activities, providing opportunities for students to meet their teachers. In addition, ample free time will be provided for students to get to know each other ’ and to begin to organise social, special interest, and recreational societies.
As part of its educational philosophy, HKUST believes all students should actively participate in campus life. One objective of the orientation programme is facilitating the development of extra-curricular activities and the organisation of ’ student societies. “The University intends to give a free hand to students in deciding among themselves how to organise as a student body,” says Mr Luke Wong, Director of Student Affairs.
Timed to take place just before the academic year begins, the five-day residential programme begins 26 September. In an official address, Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Chia-Wei Woo, will welcome all new students to the University. Subsequent days’ activities will include organised presentations, opportunities for academic counselling, as well as sports competitions and a talent show.
Having just moved into its new campus in Clear Water Bay, HKUST is now preparing to receive its inaugural class of undergraduate and postgraduate students. Of the 600-odd student registered as undergraduates, almost 90% will reside in accommodation on campus in the 1991-92 academic year. All will be invited to l attend the orientation programme.
