HKUST Students to Benefit from New Summer School Programme Engineering students at HKUST will be able to spread out the course load of their degree programmes with the unveiling this month of an innovative array of summer school courses by the School of Engineering.
“With the introduction of this scheme we are giving students the option of doing a three-year degree programme over eight or nine semesters, which is equivalent to a four-year programme,” says Professor Ping Keung Ko, Dean of Engineering at HKUST. The added flexibility also means that very able students will be able to take additional classes, opting for a more aggressive schedule.
Dr Neil Mickleborough, Associate Dean of Engineering, says the commitment to building a regular summer school programme reflects strong feelings among the faculty that more time is needed to cover all the aspects of modern engineering. “Nearly every place else in the world, an engineering degree is four years,” he points out.
All six departments in the School of Engineering will offer at least one core course and up to two additional electives during the eight-week summer session for 1995-96. Students will normally be allowed to register for up to two courses in the summer session.
Among the courses on offer are Theory of Computation (Computer Science), Introduction to Industrial Engineering (Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management) and Environmental Engineering and Science (Civil and Structural Engineering).
