Sri Lanka is an island just south of India. While most Sri Lankans are Buddhist in religion, many folk customs and non-Buddhist religious practices are followed there. Devil dancing is one such example. Basically, this dance is performed to get rid of an evil spirit, disease, or even bad luck.

The dance is performed by several dancers and drum players, all from the bottom of society. First, though, three tiny temples are constructed in front of a victim’s residence. These palm-leaf structures are built for the demons, gods, and evil spirits. The dancers then attempt to draw these creatures out of their newly-built homes and into the performance area. As the beat drops, the male dancers will make a series of dance moves to excite these beings. This can go on for quite some time, so occasionally, breaks are taken, during which other performers may perform magic tricks or other entertainment for the gathering crowds.

At the high point of the performance, the dancers put on masks and become possessed by the evil spirits. From within their borrowed bodies, the spirits then introduce themselves to the audience and tell them their reason for coming. At that point, the head priest starts to question and threaten them. Sometimes, he may even offer them money or other gifts in order to make them leave the victim.

This custom probably predates Buddhism, but it still continues to be followed in rural Sri Lanka. Like other mainstream religions, Buddhism has adopted and adapted elements of local practice and belief in order to strengthen its bond with the local people. This, though, makes Sri Lankan Buddhism quite different from Tibetan, Thai, Chinese or Japanese Buddhism. No matter what this means for the unity of the global Buddhism community, rituals such as Sri Lanka’s devil dances certainly are colorful and fascinating.

(B) The dancers come from the lower class of the society. (C) The dance is performed in Tibet as well.

(D) The dancers have to remain silent from start to end.

4 9 . Which of the following is closest in meaning to the word “rituals” in the last paragraph? (A) captivity (B) catastrophe (C) ceremony (D) competition

Stories are not merely extras in our life. They are vital nourishment in the process of becoming fully human. I remember many books I read in childhood such as The Secret Garden, Peter Pan, and Alice in Wonderland. These books, among others, started me on the road to becoming human and I am awed and grateful.

I remember books such as these and I am deeply troubled by publishers whose main goal is to make a profit. There publishers sell only what children say they like to read. However, I don’t know of any parents who feed their children only sugared cereals and bubble gum, because that is what the children say they like to eat. The best way to cultivate children’s tastes is to read to them, starting at birth and keeping on and on. “Let me hear you read it” is a treat. “Let me read it to you” is a gift. So as a mother, let me urge you to read your children as many stories as

possible. For if we are careless in the matter of nourishing the imagination, the world will pay for it. In fact, we can see that in many cases that the world already has.

Some people think that reading stories is a way to kill time when the real world needs tending to. But books show me ways of being, ways of doing, ways of dealing with people and situations and problems that I could never have thought up on my own. I am not killing time; I am trying to understand life.

With the end of the Second World War and the founding of the United Nations, an international trade organization was proposed to regulate trade between countries to help their economies recover from the war. Although early attempts failed, negotiations between nations led to the General Agreement on Tariffs (關稅) and Trade in 1947. The GATT is not an organization, but a series of agreements between member nations to help reduce barriers to international trade and is updated through new negotiations every few years. The main areas of concern include opening up new markets, determining the types of goods to be considered and reducing tariffs. Over the many years and several rounds of negotiations, more and more nations joined the talks and ultimately resulted in the formation of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 1995.

Based in Geneva, Switzerland, the WTO, unlike the GATT, is an actual organization that helps to administer trade agreements and insures that all parties involved follow the rules. The WTO also acts as a platform for trade negotiations, providing means for settling trade disputes. As of 2008, the WTO had had over 150 member nations, which account for over 97% of world trade. While the GATT deals mainly with traded goods, the WTO and its agreements now cover various services from banking, insurance to intellectual property. In today’s global village, the importance of the WTO is unquestionable.
