HKUST HOLDS SIXTH CONGREGATION
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology will hold its Sixth Congregation between 11 and 13 November (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday). Academic degrees will be presented to a total of 2,307 graduates, including 1,842 undergraduate and 465 postgraduate students.
Chairman of the HKUST Council, Dr the Hon Sze-Yuen Chung, will officiate on Wednesday, while Vice-Chairman of the Council, Dr Vincent Lo, will preside over the Congregation on Thursday. The Chancellor and Chief Executive of the Hong Kong SAR, the Hon Tung Chee Hwa, will officiate on Friday.
The University will confer honorary doctorates on five distinguished scholars, business and community leaders. Prof Merton H. Miller, a Nobel Laureate in Economics and world-renowned scholar in corporate finance, will receive an honorary Doctor of Social Sciences degree. Prof Xu Kuangdi, one of ChinaÕs most distinguished engineers and political leaders, and Mayor of Shanghai, will receive an honorary Doctor of Engineering degree. Prof Ambrose Yeo-chi King, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Professor of Sociology in the Chinese University of Hong Kong, will receive an honorary Doctor of Letters degree. Mr Larry Yung Chi Kin, Chairman of CITIC Pacific, will receive an honorary Doctor of Business Administration degree. The Hon Antony Kam Chung Leung, Managing Director & Regional Manager of the Chase Manhattan Bank and Chairman of the Education Commission, will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree.
The University will also recognize teaching excellence and outstanding performance by students. Dr Khaled Ben Letaief, an associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, will receive the Michael G. Gale Medal for Distinguished Teaching. Miss Ruby Hau, former president of the HKUST Students' Union, will be awarded the Stephen Cheong Kam-chuen Medal for Distinguished Service to the Student Body.
Academic Achievement Medals will be presented to 16 outstanding graduates who each maintained a straight A grade average throughout their undergraduate years.
