University Bestows Honorary Fellowships on Paul Cheng & Christine Loh

In recognition of their significant contributions to the community and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), the award of Honorary Fellow was conferred upon Mr Paul Cheng and Dr Christine Loh at a special ceremony held today (19 May 2004).

Both Mr Cheng and Dr Loh are steadfast supporters of the University and its mission to contribute to the social and economic development of Hong Kong. Mr Cheng is a founding member of the HKUST Court, a responsibility he carried out with distinction from 1994 to 2002. He continues to fulfill the position of Adjunct Professor in HKUST's School of Business and Management, stimulating his students' interest with lessons borne of a lifetime's dedicated employ in business and public service.

Dr John C C Chan (right), the Council Chairman, presented the certificate to Paul Cheng In his remarkable career, Mr Cheng has sat on and chaired

the boards of several major international companies including Inchcape Pacific and N M Rothschild and Sons (Hong Kong). In 1987 he became the first Chinese chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, and from 1992 to 1994 chaired the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce. A self-described moderate, Mr Cheng was an advisor to Beijing on Hong Kong affairs in the 1990s, and is highly respected for his work as a legislator.

Dr Loh personifies a host of important causes from democracy, freedom and gender equality, to environmental

protection, human rights and the rule of law. Her interests also encompass the education sector, and since 1999 she has been an invaluable member of the University Council.

Having made her mark on the business sector in the 1980s, Dr Loh proceeded to focus her attention on the political landscape. She was a Legislative Councilor between 1992 and 2000, representing a wide-variety of causes and contributing significantly to the advancement of issues such as gender equality and environmental protection. In 2000, Dr Loh founded the independent think tank, Civic

Exchange. As its Chief Executive, she continues to dedicate herself to promoting civic education and public policy studies in Hong Kong. Indeed, despite its modest budget, Civic Exchange has rapidly established itself as significant authority in Hong Kong's public policy sphere.

Honorary Fellowships were introduced by HKUST in May 2000. This distinguished award serves to recognize esteemed town and gown relationships, and exemplifies the University's appreciation of community leaders who have made significant contributions to HKUST and Hong Kong through their endeavors.
