INGThe K P Tin Foundation has donated HK$3 million to the HKUST Foundation, established to raise funds in support of research and teaching developments at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST).
To express the University’s appreciation for this generous donation, the University Center Hall has been named after Mr Tin. The naming ceremony was held at HKUST today and officiated by Mr Tin, his four sons, Charles, Jackson, Wing, and Dennis, as well as Prof Paul Ching-Wu Chu, President of HKUST.
The Tin Ka Ping Hall, approximately 200 square meters in area, is a multi-functional facility used for ceremonies, symposiums, talks, and art performances.
“HKUST has become a world-class research university in 10 short years and has contributed enormously to the education and research developments of Hong Kong. I hope that this donation will further enhance HKUST’s teaching and research,” said Mr Tin.
Prof Chu said: “HKUST is very grateful for Mr Tin’s generous donation. Mr Tin is a celebrated industrialist who has made significant contributions to the Hong Kong economy over the years. He spares no effort to support education, and his philanthropy has greatly enriched academic institutions in both Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland. I hope that the business community will continue to support HKUST.”
The K P Tin Foundation was established by Mr Tin in 1982 to promote the welfare of the elderly and the young, to support education and culture, and to contribute to the community and the nation. The Foundation has supported more than 800 charitable projects in Hong Kong, the Chinese Mainland, and Taiwan. Mr Tin places special emphasis on education. Beneficiaries of the Foundation include 40 universities, 70 secondary schools, and 40 primary schools.
A recipient of many honors and awards, Mr Tin was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire, and the Purple Mountain Observatory in Nanjing has named the asteroid 2886 the Tin Ka Ping Star. He is an honorary citizen of over 30 provinces, cities and prefectures in the Chinese Mainland, and has been conferred honorary doctorates and professorships by many universities.
