New Head of Research and

Development at HKUST

Dr Otto C. C. Lin is the new Vice-President for Research and Development at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Dr Lin has prime responsibility for overseeing and facilitating

research activities at the University, which range from basic research, through applied research, to technology transfer and commercial applications.

"I am delighted to be returning to Hong Kong during such an historic year," said Dr Lin. "The research resources of this University have much to offer Hong Kong as it adjusts to a new role in a

technological, knowledge-based society.

"It is a difficult challenge but will strengthen Hong Kong's

competitiveness in the world economy. I look forward to contributing to it."

Biography

Born in Guangdong, Dr Lin moved to Hong Kong in the 1950s and attended junior school here before moving to Taiwan. After

graduating from National Taiwan University with a BS in chemical engineering, he moved to the United States where he received an MA and PhD in physical and polymer chemistry.

After college, he joined the Du Pont Company in the US, working on product development and process design. After 17 years at Du Pont, Dr Lin returned to Taiwan. In 1983, he was appointed founding director of the Materials Research Laboratory, a part of the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI). He latter served two terms as president of ITRI.

During this period he also held various positions at National Tsing Hua University, including dean of the School of Engineering and professor of engineering management. Most recently, Dr Lin has been a visiting professor at the National University of Singapore.
