Final Report

The two-year National Science Council Grant has been vital to my research and writing. I am grateful for the financial resources given for research assistants, office materials, research stipend, and trips abroad to do research/present at a conference.

The opportunity to present a paper at the American Historical Association’s 124th annual meeting was an invaluable chance to get feedback on my research from top scholars. I put together a panel on “American History through East Asian Lenses: Anti-Americanism, Exceptionalisms, and Abraham Lincoln,” which included scholars from the Republic of Korea and Hong Kong. My paper, “Lincoln in Taiwan: An American President and the Republic of China’s Contest for Identity,” was well received. After the conference, an editor of the Pacific Historical Review invited me to submit the paper for possible publication. At the AHA, I also made connections with scholars, ties that will be valuable in improving my research/writing. I hope to submit a revised draft in the coming months.

The 2010 research trip to Chicago university libraries and museum archives has helped my research and will influence my writing for years to come. The libraries/research collections at the University of Chicago, University of Illinois at Chicago, Newberry Library, and Chicago History Museum (formerly Chicago Historical Society) were very helpful in finding both primary source (some unique original sources) and scholarly sources for my research/writing.

The 2011 research trip to New York City libraries was likewise vital to my research/writing, particularly my time spent at the New York Public Library and Columbia University libraries. The timing of my research trip was especially important, as my ability to access these sources will help me finish up on my book manuscript – The Paper War: Anglo-American Debates about the Republic, 1800-1825 (contract signed with Palgrave Macmillan) – and begin my next research project on early notions of American exceptionalism. The high point of my trip was finding primary sources that will help me to understand the American response to the War of 1812. My book will be more thorough and detailed with the addition of these sources.

I submitted my book manuscript to Palgrave Macmillan, an important UK-US publisher of scholarly books, in August of this year. I am awaiting readers’ responses. My book, The Paper War: Anglo-American Debates about the American Republic, 1800-1830, will be printed in the “Britain and the World Series,” recognition of the Anglo-American components of my work. Completion of my book manuscript would have been difficult without the NSC grant.

In addition, my paper, completed in 2010, ““This babe-in-arms”: Joseph de Maistre’s Critique of America,” appeared in Carolina Armenteros ed. Heir and Enemy of the Enlightenment: Joseph de Maistre and the Legacy of Philosophie (Oxford: Voltaire Society at the University of Oxford, 2011). I also had another article published - “Who Won the War of 1812?: A Cultural-Historical

Reassessment” Whampoa: An Interdisciplinary Journal 59 (October 2010), 255-270. I expect further articles from the NSC-supported research.

NSC Research Trip report – 2011 New York City Research Libraries My summer research trip to New York City libraries and archives was extremely productive. The research trip provided a chance to both collect materials that I have been unable to find in Taiwan and to discover new

sources, both primary and scholarly materials, which will lead to a better book and articles.

I will submit the manuscript to Palgrave this month (August 2011).

I spent much of my time at the New York Public Library and especially at the Columbia University libraries, where I am an alumnus of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The Columbia collections are amongst the best in the United States for both American and English primary sources. The university libraries have supported important research on Anglo-American literary relations and travel literature for generations. Columbia University, with its rich collection of databases and easy access, provided a chance to download hundreds of .pdf files of primary source materials.

The high point of my trip was finding primary sources that will help me to understand the American response to the War of 1812. My book will be more thorough and detailed with the addition of these sources.

New York City provided an excellent location for research, with a concentration of excellent libraries, research within a small distance, and excellent public transportation. This trip will help my research/writing substantially.

My research/writing helps to illuminate, within a historical context, the process of cultural understanding (and misunderstanding). In my book manuscript, The Paper War: Anglo-American Debates over the Republic, I look at the mutual failure of these two kin nations to come to a reasonable understanding of one another. Images of America, both American and British, failed to properly comprehend realities of continued Anglo-American cultural relations and the increasing prosperity of the US. I believe that the contest of American ‘images in the world’ as well as the papers I have written on American public diplomacy, might have some modest impact on looking at the underpinnings of foreign relations in a practical context.
