It might seem somewhat incidental when businesses encounter a downturn and prices rise. 31 , these conditions often can be predicted. They are the result of changes in the economy and affect everyday business cycles. Business cycles include periods of loss as well as gain, ease as well as struggle, which are encountered by companies in the normal course of conducting a business. For example, businesses may offer a service at an affordable price at one point in time and fail to become profitable but may then see this same service 32 tons of cash at a later point. The difference is not the business, but rather, is the economy.
What's more, business cycles track the economy as a whole and rarely does a single industry cause the entire market to collapse.
When the economy is "good" ̶ something that is characterized by low unemployment, low 33 , and rising wages ̶ most businesses experience a boom, or an increase in profits and success. Other factors also contribute to booms, some of 34 are uncontrollable, but the short explanation of these good times is that when people have more money to spend, businesses have more money to make.
Similarly, businesses experience a bust, or a decrease in profits and success, when 35 . For most people, a sagging economy means it might be hard to find work and pay bills. For businesses, a sagging economy means it might be difficult to stay in operation.

Text 1
Every place has its food taboos. Muslims don't eat pork, eating horses or dogs is revolting to many Americans, most Europeans would never eat a spider, and Hindus are forbidden to eat hamburgers because they are made from cow meat.
These and other food taboos often serve to unfairly divide people into "us" and "them". For instance, during the period of British rule in India, when it was uncommon for English and Indian people to marry, many English people refused to eat an Indian dish called "kutti pi". It is made from unborn baby animals taken from the wombs of pregnant cows and goats. "Kutti pi" was considered a great delicacy among many Indians, but English people typically denounced it and said eating a fetus was gross and uncivilized.
Food taboos also are falsely made up in order to make other people seem inferior in some way. Years ago, a picture was circulated on the Internet that showed an Asian man chewing on the spine of a barbecued human baby. The text that accompanied the picture stated that in China there was a high demand for babies and fetuses and these could be purchased from hospitals for between $100 and $200. Needless to say, this horrible and false story about cannibalism in modern times had nothing to do with the food that Chinese people actually ate. This story reflected what some Westerners wanted to believe about Asians. When those Westerners said, "Yuck! I would never eat that! How cruel!", what they also were saying was that they were more civilized than Chinese people.
Whoever it was who made up the story of the dish of barbecued human babies, he or she might have been inspired by many foods in Asia that are not common in the west. These foods include dishes made from the meat of rats and monkeys. Such dishes shock many Westerners. In the future, perhaps only human flesh will be a taboo food. In the other hand, perhaps any kind of animal meat will become a

Text 2
In northern Europe, there is a small country with a coastline on the North Sea called "The Netherlands." The word "nether" means lower or below, as much of the territory of the Netherlands is below sea level. Most of the rest of the land rises only a meter or two above the sea. Accordingly, almost the entire country is vulnerable to serious flooding. If we read through the Netherlands' history, we will find that the country has been engaged in a constant struggle to keep itself dry.
For the purpose of staying above the water, homes and communities were built on top of artificial earthen mounds by the earliest inhabitants of the low-lying country. Through the years, these mounds were connected with bridges made of raised earth. When three communities were connected in a triangle, the pathways became dikes that protected the land inside the triangle from flooding.
The triangular enclosures kept floodwater out, but they also prevented rain and ground water from draining, making the land swampy, unproductive, and unhealthy. The solution to this was the famous windmills of the Netherlands. Power from these windmills was used to lift water up over the dikes and into rivers and canals. The land thus could be used for farming. The system of dikes expanded over time, and more land was protected and became productive.
Dikes also were used to reclaim land from and keep existing land from being taken by the North Sea. But the battle never ends. After a disastrous flood in 1953, the Netherlands government undertook a massive project to improve the country's defenses against the sea. Thousands of kilometers of dikes were reinforced and raised higher. Nowadays the entire country is defended by a carefully managed system of dikes and pumps, canals and man-made lakes.
The Dutch, as people from the Netherlands are known, are proud of the way they have reclaimed their land and stopped it from sinking into the sea. This pride is shown by a saying: "God created the world, but the Dutch created the Netherlands."
41. Which of the following statements best summarizes the main idea of this passage? (A) The Dutch picked a wrong place to live.

(B) To indicate that the Netherlands will soon be completely underwater. (C) To indicate that stopping the Netherlands from flooding is a difficult struggle. (D) To indicate that there is strong disagreement about how to stop flooding in
the Netherlands.
45. In the final paragraph of this passage, which of the following words would work as a replacement for "reclaimed"?
