Abstract

Forest ecosystem management depends on detailed information about forest stand structure. Traditional ground investigation requires vast amount of manpower, resources, costs, and time, hence it is not easy to promptly obtain accurate information by using ground investigation. Airborne laser scanner (LIDAR) is capable of measuring objects at very high density and penetrating gaps among tree crowns, therefore it can rapidly obtain 3D data about forest stands, and can be used for acquiring related data about forest stand structures. This study utilized an airborne laser scanner data set, acquired using Leica ALS40 scanner, of the Yangminshan National Park area to derive digital surface model for the forest canopy. Furthermore, the forest canopy height model was estimated by computing the difference between the digital surface model and a digital elevation model. The canopy height model was compared to the tree heights measured in eleven ground sample plots in order to assess its accuracy. The results indicate that the forest canopy height is generally underestimated by using the LIDAR data. More accurate

近年來遙測技術發展迅速, 遙測影像的光譜解像力與空間解像力均提 高甚多,例如:HYDICE(Hyperspectral Digital Imagery Collection Experiment)、 AVIRIS(Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer)、CASI(Compact Airborne Spectrographic Imager)之影像資料均超過兩 百個光譜波段,IKONOS 衛星影像之空間解 像力可達一公尺,QuickBird 衛星影像更提 昇至約 61 公分的空間解像力,使得遙測技 術對不同地物之辨識能力大為增加,更大幅 提昇遙測技術之實用性。 空載雷射掃描(LIDAR,LIght Detection And Ranging)與 RADAR (RAdio Detection And

(MTWDCON, Modified TaiWan Datum CONversion

KEY WORDS: laser scanner, digital terrain model

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to generate digital terrain model by using laser scanner data. This study utilized an airborne laser scanner (Leica ALS40) and a terrestrial laser scanner (Leica HDS3000) to obtain data of a sample plot selected from the Yangminshan National Park located in northern Taiwan. For both data sets, estimation of tree height model was derived from the difference between local maximum and local minimum within each grid cell, and digital terrain model was generated by substracting tree height model from the digital surface model created from the surface points. To assess the accuracy of the resultant DTMs, the DTMs were compared to a DTM generated from photogrammetric procedure.

1. INTRODUCTION

Similar to radar (RAdio Detection And Ranging), lidar (LIght Detection And Ranging) is a very advanced active remote sensing technique with laser light as the energy source. Lidar obtains measurements at very high density, therefore it provides excellent horizontal resolution.

Additionally, lidar has the capability of recording multiple return pulses of the initial laser energy. An airborne lidar system is capable of acquiring range image for a large area very efficiently. Classification of the return pulses yields both the ground elevation and non-ground elevation, which allows direct measurements of the heights of buildings and vegetation (Baltsavias, 1999b; Wehr and Lohr, 1999). Recent development of lidar technologies has led to applications of lidar in various disciplines, which include: mapping of electrical transmission lines and towers (Wehr and Lohr, 1999), generation of DTM (digital terrain model) in forested areas (Kraus and Pfeife, 1998), forest canopy structure investigation (Drake et al., 2002), biomass estimation (Lim and Treitz, 2002), and forest fire detection (Utkin et al. 2002).

Airborne lidar technique has certain advantages over photogrammetric procedures, particularly the capability of lidar to obtain ground measurements in forested area provide accurate estimation of DTM (Baltsavias, 1999a; Kraus and Pfeife, 1998). This research utilized an airborne lidar system for obtaining data about the Yangmingshan National Park area in northern Taiwan, and the

techniques for deriving digital surface model (DSM) and DTM using lidar data was investigated. In addition, the same procedures were applied to data acquired using a terrestrial lidar system. To assess the capability of lidar in estimation of DTM, the height measurements derived from lidar data were compared to the results generated from photogrammetric procedures.

2.1 Study area

The study area for this research is located within the Yangmingshan National Park, a very popular recreation area in the vicinity of the Taipei City. The elevation of the park ranges from 200 to 1,120

(23)

large-leaved nanmu (Machilus kusanoi). Consisting of a cluster of more than 20 volcanoes, the park is famous for its outstanding natural beauty, geological features, and abundant hot spring resources (Yangmingshan National Park 2004).

2.2 Data

2.2.1 Lidar data: A Leica ALS40 airborne laser scanner mounted on an airplane was used to acquire data for the study area on April 14, 2002. The sensor was equipped with an aircraft position and orientation system (POS), which recorded the aircraft position and attitude information using a GPS receiver and IMU (inertial measurement unit). The POS data were processed using a

proprietary software to generate WGS84 ground coordinates of all the reflected laser pulses (Leica Geosystems, 2002). Furthermore, the data were transformed from WGS84 to local coordinate system and subsequently a filtering process was performed to separate ground points from non-ground points. The flight parameters and the number of points in the airborne lidar datasets provided by the vendor are shown in Table 1. Moreover, a terrestrial lidar system, Leica HDS3000, was used to scan a sample plot selected from the study site. In order to register the data with local coordinate system, GPS-RTK was used to measure control points in the sample plot. The raw data was processed using Cyclone software to align point clouds captured from different scanning

positions, and to transform data into text file containing (X, Y, Z) coordinates for further processing. The parameters of the terrestrial lidar dataset are shown in Table 2.

meter was used in this study. Fig. 1 depicts shaded relief of the study area computed from the digital elevation model assuming 315° (azimuth) and 45° (altitude) as the position of the illumination source.

2.2.3 Ancillary data: In addition to aerial photographs and satellite images, this study used topographic maps (1:1000), orthoimages (1:5000), land cover maps, ground control points (GCP) measured using real-time kinematic (RTK) GPS, and field data to evaluate the quality of the lidar dataset. For photogrammetric processes, ground control points were measured using high-precision surveying instruments such as GPS and total stations.

2.3 Method

The lidar datasets contain irregularly spaced point clouds with four measurement readings, i.e., easting, northing, elevation, and intensity of the returned pulse. As shown in Table 1, the airborne lidar data has three datasets including all points, surface points, and ground points. The data were text files, and the (X,Y, Z) values were in TWD97 (Taiwan geodetic datum based on the Geodetic Reference System 1980, GRS80) coordinate system with elevation representing geodetic height. In order to compare with the DEM, the datasets were converted to ARC/INFO raster grids with common origin and cell size as the DEM. From the dataset containing all points data, the minimum elevation, maximum elevation, average elevation, and number of points within each grid cell were computed and corresponding GRID maps were created. Moreover, the lidar datasets were converted into vector maps, i.e., ARC/INFO point coverages. All the data conversions were done using

software programs written in C and AML (Arc Macro Languate).

The lidar DSM (LIDAR_DSM) was represented by the grid map containing local maximum, and the grid map of local minimum provided estimation of the DTM (LIDAR_DTM). The lidar canopy height model (LIDAR_CHM) was obtained by subtracting the LIDAR_DTM from the

LIDAR_DSM. Processing of the lidar data required large amount of computer disk space and memory because the size of the original data was quite large. To reduce processing time, a subset of the lidar dataset, 1 km x 1 km, was selected to experiment with the analytical methods developed for this study. Within the experimental site, a sample plot was selected to capture data using the terrestrial lidar system. The same algorithms were applied to the terrestrial lidar dataset in order to

(25)

Fig. 1. Shaded relief of the study area produced from DEM

3. Results

The airborne lidar data points were grouped into 4 m x 4 m grid cells, within each cell statistical analysis was performed. Because of the high point density, only very few grid cells were voids, i.e., without any observation of lidar pulses. For the 1 km x 1 km experimental site, only 15 out of 62,500 cells were voids, which amounted to 0.024% of the experimental area.

Analyzed on a per cell basis, the LIDAR_DSM, LIDAR_DTM, and LIDAR_CHM are shown in Fig. 2, Fig. 3, and Fig. 4, respectively. As compared to the 4-meter AP_DTM (Fig. 5), more roughness and details are observed in the LIDAR_DSM and LIDAR_DTM. This was because the AP_DTM was produced by interpolating the stereo image model during the automatic matching process, in contrast, the LIDAR_DSM and LIDAR_DTM were generated using local functions. For comparison between the AP_DTM and LIDAR_DTM, a TIN (triangulated irregular network) was constructed from the AP_DTM, then the (X, Y) coordinates of the grid points of the LIDAR_DTM were used to compute the elevation values by interpolating from the TIN model. Table 3 depicts the comparisons of the elevations between the AP_DTM and LIDAR_DTM. The mean difference between the terrestrial LIDAR_DTM and the AP_DTM was less than mean difference between the airborne LIDAR_DTM and the AP_DTM. This was because the airborne lidar could not see through densely vegetated areas, which caused larger bias for estimation of the ground elevations.

4. conclusions

While a more complete analysis is needed to evaluate the accuracy of estimation of forest canopy height, the results indicate that the lidar data have great potential for measuring forest canopy structure directly. Further study will be focused on validation of the predicted lidar canopy height with field survey data, and methodology for integrating remote sensing data with lidar data to improve the accuracy of classification results as well as canopy height estimation.
