As greenhouse gases (GHG) build up in our atmosphere, scientists predict that temperatures could rise by 4°C in the twenty-first century. Higher temperatures mean warmer water in the oceans, which makes tropical storms stronger. If the rise in temperature doesn't slow down, more than one million species will be wiped off the face of the Earth by 2050. A 2°C rise in ocean temperature would kill 97 percent of coral reefs and all the animals that live with them.

Many islands and coastal cities may be underwater if sea levels keep rising. As we lose farmable land to rising water and droughts, more people will face food and clean-water shortages.

Now that governments are taking steps to reduce global warming, we may be able to make the world a better place. By doing so, future generations of this planet will be able to live without the worry of their cities being underwater, or their air

(C) Seventy percent of coral reefs and the creatures that live with them will die. (D) One million species in the ocean will die by 2050.

44. What is the main idea of the article?

(A) Steps that governments are taking to reduce global Warming (B) To discuss the good and bad of global warming

(C) Global warming and how it affects our planet (D) How coastal cities will soon be underwater

For some adults, chasing fireflies and watching them light up the hills on summer nights are fond childhood memories. Unfortunately, fireflies may become part of the past since they are at risk of disappearing.

Taiwan is home to more than fifty firefly species. Fireflies glow at night to find mates, but too much light prevents fireflies from seeing each other, so they cannot get together. Water pollution, the use of chemicals on plants, and the mismanagement of waterways have also contributed to the firefly's decreasing numbers. The Taiwanese government have taken action to protect these creatures. Ponds and grasslands are also being developed to create nice place for snails and worms, which are the main food for firefly larvae.

The best time for firefly watching in Taiwan is late spring, and several places across the island are ideal for this activity. In May, people head to Tucheng, New Taipei City, to look at tung blossoms during the day and glowing fireflies that speckle the sky at night. Dongshi Forest Park in Taichung offers guided tours for firefly watching, and the clean water at Hualien's Li-yu Lake offers an ideal environment for fireflies and butterflies to live. Just remember to wear long-sleeved shirts to prevent insect bites. If you use a flashlight, cover it with red cellophane to reduce the glare so that it won't harm the fireflies. Also, don't capture fireflies and take them away from their home.

Taiwan is an amazing place to observe fireflies. If we take the proper steps to conserve their home, fireflies will be a joy to watch for many generations.

45. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as something that contributes to the firefly's decreasing population?

(A) Dirty water (B) Light pollution

(C) Harmful material put on plants (D) Rivers and creeks with no light source 46. Which of the following is true, according to the article?

(A) There are fewer than fifty firefly species in Taiwan now. (B) The best time to watch fireflies is early spring.

(C) Firefly larvae mainly eat snails and earthworms. (D) Fireflies glow at night to attract prey.

47. According to the article, what is something you should do when you go firefly watching? (A) Wear long-sleeved shirts to prevent insect bites.

(B) Make sure your camera's battery is charged so that you can take pictures of the fireflies. (C) Cover your flashlight with green cellophane.

(D) Be as quiet as possible so that you don't scare the fireflies.

The US state of Hawaii is composed of several islands. The largest ones are Hawaii and Maui, followed by Oahu, which is where my family and I recently spent our holiday. Oahu is also known as “The Gathering Place,” since most of the local people live there and it is home to the states largest city, Honolulu.

As we flew into Honolulu International Airport, I could see skyscrapers lining the arched, sandy coastline known as Waikiki Beach. My excitement built as we headed to our beachside hotel, Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa. Unlike Disney's amusement parks, Aulani doesn't have any rides. Instead, it offers a clear blue sea and several pools.

We spent most of our vacation enjoying water sports. Snorkeling was a lot of fun as it gave us a chance to see schools of tropical fish and wonderful coral gardens. I also got to make my lifelong dream come true. It was surfing in Hawaii. With expert instructions, I was up and riding on my first wave. Located near our hotel were many public beaches that we explored. The palm trees and dramatic sunrises and sunsets there made every picture we took look like a postcard.

All too soon, we were on our flight back to my other favorite island, Taiwan. As the plane took off, though, I vowed to return to discover more of amazing Hawaii. 48. why is Oahu known as "The Gathering Place"?
