27/06/2008 HKUST to offer more than 1,000 Scholarships to young talents
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is offering more than 1,000 scholarships amounting to $31 million to outstanding students from across the world, including the Mainland, Taiwan and Macao.
"Investing in the younger generation is one of the best investments a community can make. The offer of scholarships is an effective way to ensure that good students would not miss out on university education because of lack of means. Scholarships also enable our students to fully concentrate on their studies and campus life," said Prof Roland Chin, HKUST's Vice-President for Academic Affairs.
In the coming academic year, over $10 million of scholarship has been set aside for the new intake of Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination students through JUPAS.
"Our JUPAS scholarship scheme for local students launched last year was immensely successful in attracting top caliber students, and we have therefore decided to maintain this scheme to encourage these illustrious students to join our university," Prof Chin noted.
"Scholarships are offered not only to outstanding local students admitted through JUPAS and other schemes on the basis of their examination results but are also offered to students who have an excellent record of all-rounded or non-academic achievements," Prof Chin added.
For students with 4 As or above in Advanced Level (AL) subjects, the scholarship will cover the tuition fee ($42,100 for the academic year 2008-09) plus an allowance of $55,000, giving a total of $97,100. For students with 3 As in AL subjects, the scholarship will be their full tuition fee. Students with 2As in AL subjects will receive $15,000 per year. The granting of all of these scholarships is subject to the student achieving a satisfactory grade in Use of English. All these are renewable for their entire course of study.
Scholarships of $15,000 per academic year, renewable for the entire course of study, are also offered to students with all-rounded achievements (with a minimum of 1A in AL subjects and a good grade in Use of English), and students who have commonly recognized special talents and outstanding achievements in sports, music, art, culture, humanities or social affairs. Since HKUST launched its new and more generous Scholarship Scheme for JUPAS students last year, there had been a significant increase in academic high flyers joining the university, based on a comparison between the recipients of scholarships in the 2007-08 academic year and those of the 07 academic year. In total, 65 students received the scholarships in 2006-07 while 106 students were awarded in 202006-07-08.
"Our scholarships are funded mainly through donations and we do appeal to all those who can afford and who share in HKUST's educational ideal to come forward and make donations," Prof Chin said.
HKUST has got the support from some donors to make special provisions to help relieve the burden of students who have been affected by the Sichuan earthquake. "We don't have any specific quota for Mainland students impacted by the earthquake but will give them special consideration, subject to the limit of our scholarship funding capability."
