IV. Reading Comprehension (20%) 1. A Star Has Fallen

He is one of the most talented, gifted superstars of all time. He is an icon, a legend. He is Michael Jackson, the King of Pop. On the night of June 25th, 2009, he was found dead in Los Angeles. Though he lived a difficult and controversial life, we were really lucky to have him with us for the past 50 years.

R. Taraborrelli once described Michael Jackson as the real-life Peter Pan, the boy who refused to grow up. Indeed, his terrible childhood life probably made him want to pursue innocence in his adulthood. For example, the surgeries to make him look younger, the amusement park he lived in, and the children playing around him. He simply wanted to buy back the lost childhood.

However his life was, Jackson’s dance and his music were influential to almost every singer and every entertainer in the past decades. His music videos and music even helped

in the US at that time. In late 2007, Jackson once said, “Music has been my outlet, break down racial barriers

2. A Man Who Learns How to Forgive

The following is a story about Larry Brown, a man who is willing to forgive, and live happily with a mended heart.

My name is Larry K. Brown, Jr. I am 33 years old, a prisoner at Waiawa Correctional Facility. I'm getting treatment to fix my addiction and my criminal conduct (犯罪行為), but most importantly to learn more about myself.

During my childhood and early adult years, forgiveness was a way to get back at someone. If someone did something to me, I would forgive them until they thought everything was alright, and then I would turn around and do it back to them twice as bad. For me, forgiveness was a tool for revenge.

On January 1, 1981, my family had a house warming party in Waialua. The party started off well and everyone was having a good time. Then all I heard was BANG.

I remember that when I ran over to my dad, I thought he was sleeping. He was still alive and breathing at the time, so I tried shaking him to wake him up. He grabbed me in his arms and told me he loved me. I fell back asleep in his arms. And the next thing I remember was the paramedics (醫護人員) lifting me off of him. Then later on that morning, I found out my dad and aunty died, and my mom was in the hospital fighting for her life. Since my father's death, I have felt nothing but hate for the man who did this to my family and me. I carried this bitter anger and frustration through my adult life. All I wanted to do was to meet up with this man someday and pay him back for the pain he had caused. My negative thoughts led to negative behaviors, which led to crime and prison. I now realized that it was all a vicious circle.

Today, after the treatments I received in jail, I feel that I finally have forgiveness in my heart. It was not easy at all, but I know I want to be free of the hate that has been stopping me from pursuing the life I was wanted to live. Now, I consider myself lucky to be alive and I

have come to realize that the vicious circle can be broken and that the power to do this is inside of me.

Adapted from the story of Larry Brown in Hawaii Forgiveness Project, 2009

3. Maybe you have heard something from your parents, your friends and even read in e-mails, but are you sure

they are true? Let’s see some common myths (迷思), and maybe you’ll be surprised! First Myth: Eating at night makes you fat.

Actually, it doesn’t matter what time of day you eat. As long as you eat only the total calories that you burn each day, you will not gain weight. If you eat fewer calories than you burn, you will lose weight, and if you eat more calories, you will gain. It is as simple as that.

Second Myth: Swimming is a great weight loss activity.

While swimming is a great exercise, professionals say the surprising truth is that unless you are swimming for

hours a day, it may not help you lose a lot of weight. Because the water is supporting your body, you're not

working as hard as you do when you run. Furthermore, people usually feel ravenous after swimming, so it may actually cause you to eat more than you normally would!

Third myth: It takes seven years for gum to pass through your digestive system (消化系統). Mom always says that if you ever swallowed gum, you would have to wait for seven years to see it again! However, the truth is that the gum doesn’t stick to your insides, it just continues along with any food you have eaten and pops out the other end. Although gum is indigestible, which actually just means your stomach acids (胃酸) are unable to break down the components (成份) of gum.

Fourth Myth: It’s easier to catch a cold when it’s cold outside.

Mom always says, “Put on a jacket or you’ll catch a cold!” But is it true? There’s a link between cold weather and colds, but it’s not what you think. You see, the “common cold” is caused by the rhinovirus (鼻病毒), and temperature has no effect on them. So why do people get a cold when it's cold outside? Because cold weather usually makes people stay indoors, which might increase the chance for people to catch other people’s virus. So, if your mother were smart, she would kick you outside when it’s winter!

52. From your understanding, what could the underlined word ravenous probably mean? (A) very sad (B) very hungry (C) very bored (D) very thirsty

53. Which of the following fact is TRUE?

(A) Swimming cannot help us lose weight at all.

(B) Wearing an extra jacket can stop you from catching a cold. (C) Gum is hard to be digested by your stomach acids.

(D) Snacks at night are worse than snacks in the morning. 54. What can we learn from this article?

(A) What our parents or friends told us are not always true.

(6)

(C) Swimming more and avoiding mid-night snacks are effective (有效的) ways for people to lose weight. (D) Temperature can influence rhinovirus a lot.

55. What could be the title (標題) of this article? (A) Actually, Your Parents Are Wrong.

(B) Some New Ideas That Changed the World. (C) Never Believe What Others Tell You !

(D) Common Medical Myths That You Should Know.
