No other country has more lethal air pollution than China. That’s why Chinese officials worked with a Dutch designer to build a smog-sucking vacuum tower, a seven-meter-tall

structure that is essentially a giant air purifier. Now, a smog tower will appear in Taiwan as well.

The tower in China uses ion technology to atract and suck in pollution particles by send -ing positive ions into the surround-ing air. Once the particles are in the tower, they will atach themselves to a negatively charged surface and be moved into a purifier at the botom of the tower. The whole process is said to improve the surrounding air quality by up to 75% and uses no more than 1,400 wats, roughly the same amount it takes to power a water heater.

Taiwan’s smog tower, which is being built in Taipei, will be less technologically advanced, though. Instead, the tower will be a twisting structure with dozens of balconies, on which there will be 23,000 trees and shrubs. The number of plants is the same as that found in Cen-tral Park, in New York City. They will absorb 130 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year, which is about the equivalent of the emissions of 27 cars. According to the last available data, Taiwan produced over 260 million tons of CO2 in 2008.

The Taipei smog tower will also feature 40 luxury condos that will be available to rent and will include a living room, dining room, family room, kitchen, and multiple bedrooms. The structure will be 20 stories tall and is modeled after a DNA strand. The construction on the tower began in 2013 and is expected to be completed in the fall of 2017.

60 . What is said about the smog tower in China? (A) It was designed by a famous Chinese architect.

(B) It is a seven-story building that looks like a DNA strand. (C) It is technologically advanced and energy-efficient. (D) It has proved to be a huge hit with the public. 61. How does Taiwan’s smog tower differ from China’s?

(A) Its cleaning capacity is more powerful. (B) It makes use of ion and green technology. (C) It is both functional and innovative. (D) It uses numerous plants to purify the air. 62. Which of the following statements about the smog tower in Taiwan is TRUE?

(A) It will occupy space as big as Central Park in New York City. (B) In addition to cleaning the air, it also doubles as residences. (C) It will be able to reduce carbon dioxide in the air by 27%. (D) It is a tube-shaped structure located in northern Taiwan. [C]
