A) Time wasters are real enemies of success. They simply divert our attention from accomplishing our goals and take us to activities that are of less or no importance in life. In addition, "time wasters" could be people, events or habits that lead to the opposite path away from our goals. The ultimate starting point in setting things straight and removing the time wasters in life is to identify them. We need to sit down and analyze the

(A) contact (B) dependence (C) faced (D) instead (E) members (AB) occasionally (BC) overprotective (CD) provided (DE) reality (AE) unwilling

(5)

activities which take our time. The analysis here is to help us see how we spend time and use it against what we really need to be doing to accomplish our goals in life.

Start by making a list of our activities and sort out the neither urgent nor important ones. Sometimes it could be a simple addiction to a TV Soap Opera, constant distractions, or even one of our core activities that we are not excellent at doing. We can, for instance, imagine that we are a business owner and we keep

sabotaging our business deals, leading the company into great financial problems. It may be time for us to re-think our strategy and have our associates do the marketing while we concentrate on the areas we are best in. The next thing would be to make sure that we plan our daily activities. We can never overemphasize the concept of planning in proper time management. One of the self-evident reasons is that we will have an upper hand in fighting against time wasters in our schedule. If we know what we want to do, what we don't want to do becomes clear, and our focus is strengthened.

Moreover, when we think of people we spend time with, we are sure to notice that some have a more positive impact on our success while others have a negative one. It is important to be able to distinguish them especially with regard to our schedule. While we do not advocate for everyone to throw away relationships, it is good to know that many times helping a friend who is emotionally disturbed can wait for dinner time and does not have to interrupt our writing that proposal or beating that deadline. Finally, do the same to our habits. List all the habits and addictions that take any amount of our time. Then, take a little time to straighten them out in line with their importance and urgency. Depending on our analysis, kill those that are detrimental to our goals in life.

54. Which of the following is the best title for the passage? (A) The Reasons Why We Are Procrastinators.

(B) The Significance of Planning Daily Activities. (C) Friendship Is More Important Than Deadlines. (D) How to Remove Time Wasters from Our Lives.

55. According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT TRUE? (A) People or things that prevent us from our goals are called time wasters. (B) We should choose emotionally disturbed friends over our proposal deadline. (C) It is worth spending some time sorting out activities that are time-consuming. (D) We should do away with habits and addictions that may distract us from our goals. 56. The underlined word “sabotaging” in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to

__________.

(A) promoting (B) offering (C) damaging (D) striking B)

I was parked in front of the mall wiping off my car. I had just come from the car wash and was waiting for my wife to get out of work. Coming my way from across the parking lot was what society would consider a bum. From the looks of him, he had no car, no home, no clean clothes, and no money. There are times when you feel generous but there are other times that you just don't want to be bothered. This was one of those "don't want to be bothered times."

"I hope he doesn't ask me for any money," I thought.

He came and sat on the curb in front of the bus stop but he didn't look like he could have enough money to even ride the bus. After a few minutes he spoke.

"That's a very pretty car," he said.

He was ragged but he had an air of dignity around him. His scraggly blond beard keep more than his face warm.

(6)

money never came.

As the silence between us widened, something inside said, "Ask him if he needs any help." I was sure that he would say "yes" but I held true to the inner voice.

"Do you need any help?" I asked.

We often look for wisdom in great men and women. We expect it from those of higher learning and

accomplishments, and I expected nothing but an outstretched grimy hand. But what he said in reply shook me. "Don't we all?" he said.

I was feeling high and mighty, successful and important, above a bum in the street, until those three words hit me like a twelve gauge shotgun.

Don't we all?

I needed help. Maybe not for bus fare or a place to sleep, but I needed help. I reached in my wallet and gave him not only enough for bus fare, but enough to get a warm meal and shelter for the day. Those three little words still ring true. No matter how much I have, no matter how much I have accomplished, I need help too. No matter how little he has, no matter how loaded he is with problems, even without money or a place to sleep, he can give. Maybe the man was just a homeless stranger wandering the streets. Maybe he was more than that.

Maybe he was sent by a power that is great and wise, to minister to a soul too comfortable in themselves.

Maybe God looked down, called an Angel, dressed him like a bum, and said tenderly, "go minister to that man cleaning the car. That man needs help."

Don't we all?

(B) Don’t We All?
