JiaXuan Ci and Fenlu in the Wei-Jin

period： try to analyze the Wei-Jin scholar’s

styles influences on JiaXuan Ci’s work

Abstract

Literary Quotation of JiaXuan Ci is undoubtedly a masterpiece

that applies to various social and life situations, particularly events taking place in the Wei and Jin dynasties. There are two objectives for this thesis: 1) to analyze the influences that social norms and contemporarily admired trends exerted on JiaXuan; and 2) to discuss the styles and the expressed essence of his work.

JiaXuan cited, modified, and criticized a lot of contemporary events and stories in his work. In so doing, JiaXuan appeared to be self-suiting and was able to relieve pressure of restoring the previous dynasties. Also, his work illustrated his thought processes and expectations to be reassigned back to the government official position when he faced tough circumstances.

JiaXuan is a very interesting study subject. He was a loyal Confucian follower with passions for dynasty restoration, and the contemporary influences (Wei and Jin dynasties) also restrained his overflowing passion. Finally, he was able to adjust his mindset for the gap between his expectations and the reality. Based on this premise, this thesis analyzes the special method of citation that JiaXuan adopted in his work.
