questionnaire. Students’ responses were transcribed and summarized item by item. According to the data collected from the think-aloud protocols, some students stated that a lack of provision of a context made it difficult for them to respond to the questionnaire. For example, two students mentioned that they used the strategy of making a time table for their writing only when they were required to do so. In addition, some students said the “genre and length of the particular assignment may determine the selection and use of strategies.” Others also pointed out that time constraint would be one issue they considered when choosing what strategies to use. As a result, the provision of a specific context is believed to not only help students to report their use of strategies but also help the researcher to establish the validity of the instruments. In this current study, a context is provided in a brief paragraph before the section of writing strategy items:

The researcher designed the above context based on undergraduate English majors’ real-life situations. Term papers are common assignments to English majors. In addition, provision of the genre and the time constraint would help the students see the relevance of such writing strategies, such as making timetables, writing outlines, discussing their papers with the teacher, and rewriting
their papers.
The modified version of the SLWSQ is divided into three sections based on the three stages of writing process: pre-writing stage, while-writing stage, and revising stage. In Petric and Czarl’s (2003) study, some students asked for clarifications of the context/stage while answering some strategy items. To avoid confusion, the stages where the strategies are used are specified. That is, the researcher added “before I start to write the English term paper,” “while writing the English term paper,” and “while revising the English term paper” to the strategy items belonging to the three writing stages respectively. In addition, the researcher provided a brief paragraph in the beginning of each of the three sections of strategy items to stress the stages concerned. What is more, feedback given by the participants in Petric and Czarl (2003) and suggestions offered by the authors were incorporated in the modification of the strategy items. A review of relevant
questionnaires also contributed to the addition of certain items. A contrast between the original items and the modified items is summarized in the following table.

Appendix D
Modifications of the SLWSQ Used in the Formal Study
In order to make the SLWSQ more applicable to the formal study and to achieve higher reliability, the researcher further modified some of the items based on the responses of the students who accomplished the questionnaires in the pilot study. The modifications are summarized below.
Modifications of the Context
Based on the students’ responses, the context provided in the questionnaire used in the pilot study caused some difficulties in answering. For example, one student stated that, “I would not use as many strategies while writing English term papers as when writing other English reports due to time constraint.” Moreover, several of the participants also responded that writing English term papers in the end of a semester might not be the most appropriate context for them to report their use of writing strategies because they wrote more English articles of other forms (i.e., compositions, essays, summaries, or comments) than term papers. Due to above reasons, the researcher modified the Chinese version of the context of “英文期末報告寫作” into “英文報告寫作”. Besides, the phrase, “英文期末報告寫作” was also replaced by “英文報告寫作” in each of the items of the newly modified SLWSQ used in the formal study.
