A superstition is a belief, and it means that one event can result in—or prevent—another, especially when the two are in no way related. Take a rabbit’s foot. Rabbits, unlike most other animals, touch the ground with their back feet first when they are running. Many Westerners thus think that this is unusual and regard a rabbit’s foot as a lucky sign. However, there is no scientific proof of this superstition. Knocking on wood is another similar example. Americans are used to saying “knock on wood” or actually doing so to prevent something bad from happening when they have just said it won’t occur or hasn’t occurred.

This is because they are afraid that tree spirits would affect their luck. Many people stick to these beliefs because they tend to superstitiously associate one event with another.

In addition to the above superstitions for good luck, some customs that have long been practiced grow out of people’s fears. Most people practice these customs to deal with the unknown. In Taiwan, for instance, the word for the number “four”

sounds like the word for “death.” Because of this association, the number “four” has long been viewed as an unlucky number by most Taiwanese people. The reason why people in some Western countries often say “Bless you” when someone sneezes is also based on superstition. In the past, they used to believe that devils might enter a person’s body when that person sneezed.

Nowadays, because of changing ideas, some superstitious customs are practiced in different ways. People are now turning to artificial feet of a rabbit to take the place of real ones, since this will help to stop the unnecessary killing of animals. However, many people still find comfort in following superstition-based customs. Though people are unable to predict the future, they still try their best to find a chance to control it.

41. What is the main idea of this passage?

(A) they believe tree spirits may bless you

(B) they believe tree spirits may keep bad things away

(C) they believe tree spirits may make good fortune go away (D) they believe tree spirits may bring good luck

43. Why do people in some Western countries often say “Bless you” when someone sneezes?

(A) They believe a person’s spirit would get out of the body when that person sneezes.

(B) They believe evil spirits would go into a person’s body when that person sneezes.

(C) They believe good spirits would bless a person when that person sneezes.

(D) They believe God would send angels to help a person when that person sneezes.

44. According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT mentioned?

(A) People follow superstition-based customs because they want to find ways to dominate the future.

There is a long-held belief that when meeting someone, the more eye contact we have with the person, the better. The result is an unfortunate tendency for people making initial contact—in a job interview, for example—to stare fixedly at the other

(4)

individual. However, this behavior is likely to make the interviewer feel very uncomfortable. Most of us are comfortable with eye contact lasting a few seconds. But eye contact which persists longer than that can make us nervous.

Another widely accepted belief is that powerful people in a society—often men—show their dominance over others by touching them in a variety of ways. In fact, research shows that in almost all cases, lower-status people initiate touch. Women also initiate touch more often than men do.

The belief that rapid speech and lying go together is also widespread and enduring. We react strongly—and suspiciously—

to fast talk. However, the opposite is a greater cause for suspicion. Speech that is slow, because it is laced with pauses or errors, is a more reliable indicator of lying than the opposite.(出自 100 年學測閱讀測驗題)
