COLLABORATION BETWEEN
HONG KONG UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AND
CHINESE ACADEMY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES
A signing ceremony will be held at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology on 13 May 1999 to seal a three-year collaborative effort between HKUST's School of Humanities and Social Science and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS). The Vice-President of CASS, Mr Shen-Ming Li, and Professor Leroy L. Chang, Vice-President for Academic Affairs at HKUST, will sign t h e agreement.
CASS is the top academic research organization in the field of philosophy and social sciences in the Chinese Mainland, as well as a national center for the humanities. CASS is now made up of 31 research institutes and 50 research centers with more than 3,200 researchers.
The collaboration between CASS and HKUST is designed to promote and support academic exchange, joint research, long-term training, conferences and workshops, information exchange, as well as long-term, mutually beneficial cooperation in other important areas.
The delegation from the CASS will visit HKUST from 11 to 16 May 1999. During the period, Mr Shen-Ming Li will provide a profile of CASS, and the Director of the Modern History Research Institute, Mr Hai-Peng Zhang, will give a lecture entitled 'Different Views on China's Modern History from the Chinese Mainland and Taiwan'.
Prof Pang-Hsin Ting, Dean of Humanities and Social Science at HKUST, is highly enthusiastic about the collaboration. "The collaboration is particularly notable because it is the first of its kind t h a t CASS has established with a university in Hong Kong," he said. "It will certainly foster frontier research in humanities and social science."
Prof Ting pointed out that CASS and the School of Humanities and Social Science at HKUST have already worked together on some research projects, including a project on cognates between t h e Chinese and Tibetan languages.
