08/05/2008 HKUST Presents Its First President's Outstanding Service Award

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has managed to win many international honors and become one of the world's leading universities of science and technology in less than 17 years. Behind this miracle are exceptional employees who put the interest of the university above their own. In order to recognize the outstanding contributions of its non-teaching staff members, HKUST today (Thursday) presented its first "HKUST President's Outstanding Service Award" on its campus.

HKUST President Prof Paul Chu presented the first "HKUST President's Outstanding Service Award" to three awardees. They are Ms Anna Wong (second from left), Mr Michael Cheng (third from left) and Mr Albert Lam.

The first "HKUST President's Outstanding Service Award" received keen response. Three awardees have been selected by the Selection Committee for their outstanding service. They are Senior Purchasing Manager in the Purchasing Office Mr Michael Cheng, Chief Technician in the Facilities Management Office Mr Albert Lam and Clerk in the Office of University Development and Public Affairs Ms Anna Wong.

Speaking at the ceremony, HKUST President Prof Paul Chu extended his profound gratitude to all awardees for their continuous contribution to the University. "Outstanding employees are never solo workers, but wonderful team players. And the most outstanding ones know how to manage the boss and tell him or her the home truth," said President Chu.

All three winners have decided to take an extraordinary action: donating their

cash prizes of HK$ 10,000 back to HKUST to help it raise more funds for further development through the matching grant scheme.

Three Awardees of the first "HKUST President's Outstanding Service Award" 1) Mr Michael Cheng, Senior Purchasing Manager in the Purchasing Office

Mr Michael Cheng has served HKUST for 19 years. He witnessed the growth of HKUST from a local university to a global leading research power house. In the eyes of colleagues, he is an enthusiastic, devoted and humble gentleman. He is always willing to help colleagues to purchase personal items as well as take up requests beyond his regular job duty. He has frequented committed himself to organizing various kinds of staff functions, such as Million Walk and Dragon Boat Competition to help make HKUST a joyful campus.

2) Mr Albert Lam, Chief Technician in the Facilities Management Office

Mr Albert Lam served Facilities Management Office for 11 years. In every task he participates in, no matter big or small, whether it is a routine consultation or the University Congregation, he always gives his wholehearted effort to make sure all steps are implemented smoothly. Mr Lam takes the lead to organize meaningful activities for staff and students, such as collection of used clothes for the poor on the mainland, and initiated the seabed cleanup activity. His self-motivated attitude cements a closer working relationship with different departments.

3) Ms Anna Wong, Clerk in the Office of University Development and Public Affairs

Ms Anna Wong is the only female winner in the first "HKUST President's Outstanding Service Award". Ms Wong has already served HKUST for 14 years. She is regarded as a "database" of the media and editorial team. She has a photographic memory and knows the ins and outs of HKUST. She always forgoes her meals to see something through when there is a press conference or before a publication deadline. During the visit of Prof Stephen Hawking in 2006, she helped distributed the updated information to the media. Her self-directed sense of duty helped made the Hawking visit a wildly successful one.
