Receipts of establishments operating in Real Estate Management, Security, Cleaning, Advertising and Conference & Exhibition Organising Services registered year-on-year growth, of which the increase for those engaging in Real Estate Management reached 22.5%.
All the surveyed industries saw increases in number of establishments. In terms of number of persons engaged, except for a decline of 13.7% recorded in Advertising Services, number of persons engaged in the other four industries registered growth, with that in Conference & Exhibition Organising Services rising by 24.1%.
As regards Gross Value Added that measures the sectoral contribution to the economy, all the industries reported year-on-year rise. Moreover, Gross Surplus of establishments operating in Real Estate Management and Conference & Exhibition Organising Services decreased as the growth in expenditure of these establishments outpaced that in receipts; meanwhile, Gross Surplus of those engaging in Advertising Services expanded by 44.0%.

Structure of Expenditure
Analysed by the structure of expenditure, as Security Services and Cleaning Services are labour-intensive industries, Compensation of Employees predominated in the expenditure of both industries, accounting for 92.3% and 79.7% of the respective total. For establishments engaging in Real Estate Management, Compensation of Employees and Operating Expenses constituted 49.6% and 35.0% of their expenditure respectively.
Expenditure of establishments in Conference & Exhibition Organising Services and Advertising Services was mainly incurred on Purchase of Goods/Services &
Commission Paid, at 67.2% and 50.9% of the respective total.
Although Gross Value Added of establishments operating in Real Estate Management, Cleaning and Conference & Exhibition Organising Services recorded increase, Average Value Added per Person Engaged of these three industries dropped by 3.7%, 1.7% and 16.0% respectively, as their increases in Gross Value Added were smaller than those in number of persons engaged. Besides, number of persons engaged in Advertising Services registered year-on-year decline (-13.7%) whereas Gross Value Added increased (+7.5%), resulting in a double-digit growth (+24.5%) in Average Value Added per Person Engaged of this industry.
Conference & Exhibition Organising Services recorded the highest Average Value Added per Person Engaged among the five surveyed industries, at MOP 0.25 million; however, Average Value Added Person Engaged of the establishments engaging in Cleaning Services was merely MOP 0.11 million.

A total of 230 establishments were operating in Real Estate Management Services, an increase of 13 year-on-year. Number of persons engaged rose by 18.2% to 6,201, with 60.8% of them being property caretakers/doorkeepers.
Receipts of the industry grew by 22.5% year-on-year to MOP 1.71 billion, of which those generated from Real Estate Management Services totalled MOP 1.37 billion, up by 17.4%. Expenditure amounted to MOP 1.49 billion, up by 29.0% year-on-year; Compensation of Employees went up by 22.6% to MOP 738 million, and Operating Expenses rose by 25.1% to MOP 521 million, with Electricity Charges (MOP 199 million) and expenditure on Maintenance and Repair (MOP 147 million) surging by 26.1% and 40.0% respectively.
The industry recorded a Gross Surplus of MOP 225 million, down by 7.7%
year-on-year. Gross Surplus Ratio (13.1%) and Gross Surplus- Expenditure Ratio (15.1%) dropped by 4.3 percentage points and 6.0 percentage points respectively, indicating that the business performance of the industry slackened slightly as compared to 2016. Meanwhile, Gross Value Added of the industry amounted to MOP 963 million, up by 13.9%.
Gross Fixed Capital Formation rose by 17.4% to MOP 15.41 million.

In terms of receipts, number of establishments with annual receipts of MOP 5 million or more totalled 67. Receipts (MOP 1.41 billion) and expenditure (MOP 1.18 billion) of these establishments took up 82.1% and 79.4% of the respective total.
On the other hand, establishments with annual receipts of less than MOP 1 million totalled 52. Both receipts (MOP 24.98 million) and expenditure (MOP 26.62 million) of these establishments accounted for less than 2%

or more persons, up by 3 year-on-year. Receipts (MOP 504 million), expenditure (MOP 481 million) and Gross Surplus (MOP 23.49 million) of these establishments increased by 48.2%, 51.0% and 7.2% respectively.
Establishments with 10 to 99 persons totalled 121 (+15 establishments), accounting for 52.6% of the total. Their receipts (MOP 964 million) and expenditure (MOP 810 million) showed respective growth of 14.9% and 21.5%. Meanwhile, Gross Surplus amounted to MOP 154 million, down by 10.3%.
There were 95 establishments with less than 10 persons, down by 5 year- on-year. Receipts (MOP 244 million) and expenditure (MOP 197 million) of these establishments grew by 12.0% and 17.0% respectively. As the growth in expenditure exceeded that in receipts, these establishments recorded a decline of 5.2% in Gross Surplus (MOP 46.83 million). In addition, Gross Surplus Ratio and Gross Surplus-Expenditure Ratio of these establishments stood at 19.2% and 23.7% respectively, higher than the corresponding ratios of the establishments of the two above-mentioned scales.

There were 54 establishments providing Security Services, up by 9 year- on-year. Number of persons engaged increased by 4.8% to 9,630; among them, 81.1% were security guards and 11.1% were property caretakers/doorkeepers.
This industry registered receipts of MOP 1.99 billion, up by 5.3% year-on- year, with those from Security Services amounting to MOP 1.90 billion.
Expenditure rose by 5.1% year-on-year to MOP 1.79 billion, of which Compensation of Employees went up by 7.1% to MOP 1.66 billion, predominating at 92.3% of the total.
Gross Surplus of the industry totalled MOP 192 million, up by 8.6% year- on-year. Gross Value Added grew by 7.3% to MOP 1.85 billion, and Average Value Added per Person Engaged went up by 2.4% to MOP 0.19 million. Besides, Gross Fixed Capital Formation of the industry tumbled by 52.4% to MOP 5.80 million in view of a reduction in acquisition of machinery and equipment.

Receipts of the industry grew by 8.8% year-on-year to MOP 1.21 billion, of which MOP 1.14 billion were generated from Cleaning Services.
Expenditure rose by 9.5% year-on-year to MOP 1.09 billion, with Compensation of Employees predominating at MOP 872 million, up by 7.8%.
Gross Surplus of the industry amounted to MOP 117 million, up by 2.1%
year-on-year; yet, both Gross Surplus Ratio (9.6%) and Gross Surplus- Expenditure Ratio (10.7%) edged down by 0.7 percentage points. Gross Value Added of the industry rose by 7.1% to MOP 989 million, and Gross Fixed Capital Formation increased by 1.3% to MOP 12.31 million.

Establishments engaging in Advertising Services increased by 36 year-on- year to 675, whereas number of persons engaged went down by 13.7% to 1,851. The proportion of employees was the lowest among all industries, at merely 73.4%.
Receipts of the industry rose by 9.4% year-on-year to MOP 859 million, with those from Advertising Services (including design services and media dissemination) increasing by 26.1% to MOP 565 million (65.8% of total).
Meanwhile, the industry also provides Services for Conferences, Exhibitions and Other Events and the corresponding receipts totalled MOP 259 million (30.1%), down by 17.4%.
The industry recorded an expenditure of MOP 803 million, up by 7.9%
year-on-year. The majority was incurred on Purchase of Goods/Services &
Commission Paid, rising by 8.5% to MOP 409 million, of which expenditure on Media Dissemination (MOP 148 million) surged by 66.5%
while Payments to Service Contractors (MOP 147 million) dropped by 23.4%.
Gross Value Added of the industry amounted to MOP 298 million, up by 7.5% year-on-year. Gross Surplus expanded by 44.0% to MOP 54.94 million; Gross Surplus Ratio (6.4%) and Gross Surplus-Expenditure Ratio (6.8%) grew by 1.5 percentage points and 1.7 percentage points respectively. Besides, Gross Fixed Capital Formation soared by 63.5% to MOP 27.32 million on account of an increase in acquisition of machinery and equipment by the establishments.

Their receipts grew by 9.2% to MOP 447 million, of which those from Advertising Services (MOP 241 million) surged by 41.4%, whereas those from providing Services for Conferences, Exhibitions and Other Events (MOP 196 million) fell by 14.2%. Meanwhile, expenditure went up by 12.3% year-on-year to MOP 427 million.
Number of establishments with less than 5 persons engaged expanded by 94 year-on-year to 577, taking up 85.5% of the total. Their receipts (MOP 260 million) and expenditure (MOP 239 million) grew by 17.2% and 14.2%
respectively, and Gross Surplus recorded a leap of 79.9%. Receipts from Advertising Services accounted for 73.4% of the receipts of these establishments, at MOP 191 million, up by 37.7%; however, receipts from providing Services for Conferences, Exhibitions and Other Events fell by 37.0% to MOP 45.69 million.

However, over half of the receipts and expenditure of the industry were generated by these establishments.

There were 98 establishments providing Conference & Exhibition Organising Services, up by 18 year-on-year. Number of persons engaged rose by 24.1% to 427.
Receipts of the industry grew by 4.4% year-on-year to MOP 405 million, of which those generated from providing Services for Conferences, Exhibitions and Other Events rose by 17.8% to MOP 296 million, taking up 73.0% of the total; meanwhile, receipts from Advertising Services decreased by 2.1% to MOP 25.90 million.
Expenditure rose by 8.6% year-on-year to MOP 374 million. Expenditure was mainly incurred on Purchase of Goods/Services & Commission Paid, up by 2.6% to MOP 251 million, with Payments to Service Contractors amounting to MOP 207 million (82.6% of total).

2016r Number of establishments with less than 5 persons engaged grew by 10 year-on-year to 66. Receipts of these establishments rose by 4.6% to MOP 80.37 million, of which MOP 67.73 million (84.3% of total) were generated from providing Services for Conferences, Exhibitions and Other Events, up by 3.4%. Besides, expenditure of these establishments (MOP 73.11 million) went down by 2.6%. As receipts saw increase while expenditure registered decline, Gross Surplus boosted by 285.2% to MOP 7.14 million.

In terms of receipts, number of establishments with annual receipts of MOP 10 million or more was 11, accounting for merely 11.2% of the industry total. Receipts (MOP 292 million) and expenditure (MOP 249 million) of these establishments took up 72.1% and 66.5% of the respective total.
On the other hand, there were 59 establishments with annual receipts of less than MOP 1 million, constituting 60.2% of the total; however, their receipts (MOP 18.79 million) and expenditure (MOP 28.24 million) only made up 4.6% and 7.6% of the respective total.

Analysed by size of establishment, there were 13 establishments with 10 or more persons engaged, up by 4 year-on-year, and number of persons engaged increased by 37.4% to 202. Despite an increase in establishments, receipts of these establishments (MOP 173 million) edged down by 0.1% whereas expenditure (MOP 171 million) rose by 7.4%, resulting in a distinct decline of 84.0% in Gross Surplus (MOP 2.27 million).

Symbols
Establishment: An economic unit which engages in one or predominantly one kind of economic activity at a single location.
Persons Engaged: All individuals who work for the establishment as at the last working day of the reference year, including employees and unpaid workers, but excluding individuals who are absent for an indefinite period.
Gross Surplus-Expenditure Ratio: Gross Surplus divided by expenditure and multiplied by 100%. The higher the ratio, the more cost-effectiveness is an establishment.
Million MOP
Average Value Added per Person Engaged: Gross Value Added divided by number of persons engaged. An indicator that measures the sectoral contribution of each person engaged to the economy.
Receipts: Receipts from the provision of services before any deduction of costs. It includes receipts from real estate management; cleaning services;
security services; rental of property; advertising design and production; conference and exhibition organising services, etc., and commission received; but exclude non-operating receipts such as interest receipts and insurance claims.
Expenditure: Includes compensation of employees, purchase of goods & services for sale, commission paid and operating expenses; non-operating expenses such as depreciation and interest paid are excluded.
Compensation of Employees: Sum of wages and salaries, payments in kind and other benefits paid to employees.
Operating Expenses: Include materials for self consumption, water supply, fuels, electricity charges, maintenance and repairs, rent of establishment, premiums on non-labour insurance, marketing, market research and publicity, professional & consulting services, contractual services (including security, cleaning and pest control services, etc.), and other operating expenses.
Purchase of Goods/Services & Commission Paid: Include the value of purchase of goods and services by the establishment for the purpose of resale, net of any discounts. Services include purchase of real estate management, cleaning and security services for resale. Commission refers to service charges paid by the establishment to intermediaries or a third party.
Gross Fixed Capital Formation: Equals the value of total acquisitions of new, used and self-produced fixed assets, less the proceeds from sales of fixed assets. Fixed assets include buildings; furniture; machinery & equipment; vehicles; and other durable goods with a usable lifespan of one year or more.
Also included are major repairs, alterations and extensions made to the existing assets.
