HKUST FIRST GRADUATES COMPETITIVE IN JOB MARKET
About 85% of 1994 HKUST graduates were employed in full-time work, with commerce and business absorbing the greatest of them, according to a recent survey conducted by the Student Affairs Office of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
Out of a total of 576 graduates from the university’s first batch of bachelor degree recipients, 567 or 98% responded to the survey.
Of those who responded, 480 were fully employed while 72 (13%) opted for further studies. Only 6 (1%) were unemployed and 4 others took up part-time or temporary work. Of the ten unemployed or part-time workers, five of them actually had received offers but they preferred to continue looking for a job of their own choice.

said they had got more than one job offer, the percentage being highest for the S x 001 of Business respondents and Management (42%).

“We find the employment situation of graduates very satisfactory,” says Mrs Lisa Hau, Senior Student Counsellor of the Student Counselling Service & Careers Centre of the SAO. The Careers Centre plans to conduct a similar survey every year and is now soliciting response and comments from employers who have posted advertisements at the Centre.
The majority of graduates (306 or 64%) joined the commercial and business sectors, while the education field absorbed the second largest group of graduates -- 78 or 16%, closely followed by the manufacturing and industries sector -- 66 or 14%.
The School of Business and Management had the highest percentage (84%) of raduates in the commercial sector, followed by Engineering (67%), while 39% of graduates from Ifi e School of Science took the lead in joining the education sector.

The median basic monthly salary for the 1994 graduates was $10,000. Teachers earned the most with a median basic monthly salary of $16,000 .
Of the 72 raduates pursuing further studies, 50% of them came from the School of Science and 42% from t a e School of Engineering. Only 8% were from the School of Business and Management. Most (78%) chose to continue their studies at HKUST.
